Although their studio albums were often hit-and-miss affairs, the Tubes could always be counted on for a good live show during their mid-1970s heyday. In fact, they became a legend in the rock and roll world for the glitzy shows, which included half-nude women performing elaborate dance routines and a variety of characters invented by frontman Fee Waybill like punk rocker "Johnny Bugger" and blissed-out glam rock icon "Quay Lewd." What Do You Want From Live can't reproduce all this visual stimuli but it does show what many critics forgot to notice about the Tubes, i.e., the fact that they were a really sharp and exciting live band. Stripped of their outre visual surroundings, songs like "Mondo Bondage" and "I Was A Punk Before You Were A Punk" still pack a visceral punch thanks to their effective combination of gonzo humor and catchy melodies. Elsewhere, the Tubes get to show off their surprisingly impressive chops on "Overture," a fast-paced medley that transforms the instrumental highlights of six different songs into one head-spinning pomp-rock blitz, and "Crime Medley," a witty tapestry of crime jazz woven from television theme songs like "Theme From Peter Gunn" and "Theme From Dragnet." The downside of What Do You Want From Live is that some of the numbers are less potent without the choreographed routines surrounding them: "Smoke (La Vie In Fumer)" and "What Do You Want From Life" both feature Fee Waybill talking about the visual chaos surrounding him and this leaves the listener feeling like they're only witnessing part of the joke (if only someone would put out a video of one of the Tubes' shows from this era). Despite this caveat, What Do You Want From Live remains a witty and entertaining live album. It may not win any new converts to the Tubes' camp, but fans of the group will definitely want to check out this entertaining souvenir from the group's wildest era. Great album Pax! The Tubes were at their best live, I had the opportunity right before they broke up. Fee Waybill was running around on stage with a chainsaw, being tied up during Mondo Bondage, the Tubes cheerleaders (:P) and the White Punks on Dope "Quay Lude" finale made a show I will never forget! Lucky for you to have seen them on the first go-round. I wore my vinyl copy of this one out while scanning the double gatefold pix from the assorted vignettes The Tubes acted out during the songs... I so much prefer the early Tubes but still appreciate the post "completion Backwards Principle" stuff too. That CD (completion Backwards Principle) is harder than a dickens to find too for whatever reason. |

I have every Tubes album on LP and still listen to them hand6.gif The only Tubes CD's I have are the first one (Mobile Fidelity version, awesome sound!), the TRASH compilation, and the one without Fee, "Genius of America". The last one isn't bad, and I saw them on that tour too at a small club right here at home. The best part was spending 15 minutes talking with Prairie Prince (I am a drummer and he is one of my all time favorites), he is a real nice guy. I wanted to go see the New Cars on tour this past summer, Todd Rundgren in for Ric Ocasek, Kasim Sultan on bass for the deceased Ben Orr, and Prairie on drums. I heard the live disc, it is really good IMHO :) They kept me too darn busy at work, I never had the chance... Cheers, Griff |

Must've been great to chat with Prairie. He is a great drummer!! I am also a drummer though not what I would deem as a trained drummer... As for the New Cars... BLECH!! You CANNOT claim lineage to the CARS when the principles are not present. We know Ric and Ben were the heart and soul of the band and without them... well... no way, Jose. I wasn't aware Prairie was in for David Robinson on the drums. David was one of my heroes from his days in The Modern Lovers... I am a fan of that stripped down, on the 2s and 4s sound and taught myself to play listening to The Cars and Candy-O. Sounds like the New Cars are a couple members short of Utopia!! JMHO and no offense intended... I love Todd but not in this guise!! |
