I wonder if the blueing process for guns will work on stainless steel buckles???

I pose this query because I can't seem to easily find 20mm PVD or DLC buckles, whether pre V, GPF, sparta or thumbnail. I need 20mm black buckles for some of my 22mm straps that narrow down to 20mm. There are a lot of 20s but they come in polished or brushed steel only.

Years ago, I saw a gunsmith in an Asian country strip down a 45 of all its finish and then saw him throw it into a cauldron of boiling blueing liquid. Some time later, the entire slide, receiver, barrel, stabilizer bar etc and all the parts were retrieved. They were all now deep, dark blue, almost shiny black.

My suspicion is that it can be done for ss buckles. If the blueing process is good enough for coloring guns, they should be good enough for "less friction" and "less action" buckles, right?

If somebody can confirm this, next time I hit that country, I'll be off to the gunsmith with a pile of buckles subtlelaugh.gif.

Thanks for any inputs.

here is a link to a strap with "torched buckle" I recieved from J&S straps here on 3T....it is 1 of the coolest buckles I have ever seen imo and very close to a blued metal or blueing process I have seen....it changes from blues to violets and you can pm Jason to see if he has more!hand6.gif

As far as I know standard gun bluing won't work on stainless steel. Caswell Plating makes a stainless blackening gel. I've used it on a few gun parts; but I don't know how well it wears.

Search caswellplating.com & click the plating/finishing tab at the top.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Nate. This is very helpful. I think the 316L of watches and the coarser iron grade content of the steel for gun parts may be the difference. I will surely research on your assist pass. ThumbsUp02.gif

WOW, thanks, OscarThumbsUp02.gif. I never knew the colors could change but that really intrigues me because it seems like this one from J+S is a rare one.

Thanks, Nic. Much appreciated. ThumbsUp02.gif I move around so much and so often that I really can't stay put in one place and do what I used to do when I started on this hobby/passion....and that was being a squirrel or mall rat....always sniffing out stuff below radar.dog smile.gif

Jeff, I experienced on a "Charcoal blue" Colt Walker 1847 that the blue was fading just by repetitive contact with the hand and showing the original grey patina of the steel: Specialy on the handle. This is a known process who happen on blued guns(who are unusual) so the blackened hold better that the Charcoal blue but is less charming.
Still, the blue slightly fading in the grey steel is a beautifull patina.
Those are old processes with heat and oiling if I remember. New coating with modern processes might hold longer.
I should name that this Colt was a replica: An original is OUT of reasonnable prices...

Thanks for your input, WilliamThumbsUp02.gif. I got similar cautionary inputs from other 3T WIS. Well, it was worth a try but I bow to collective wisdom from you guyssubtlelaugh.gif

Thanks, Przemek. I will search it, for sure. I can't really tell from the photo you gave because the light reflects on the case and bezel but the caseback, crown and stem look really black.

Thanks for the assist pass, amigoThumbsUp02.gif

Jeff
I tried two concoctions I have in my gunroom last night on some s/s buckles.  Both rely on a chemical rather than heat process to effect the darkening of the metal.  It was a 100% failure.  It works well on gunmetal due to the high carbon content I guess.
The heat based blueing process might work on s/s, but I have no experience with that

Thanks, Graham, for the effort and alchemy on this one.

I think the introdction of heat to open up the steel's pores and force the black/blue binding agents might work but I will be cautious. Worth a try and next time I drop by the gunsmith, I'll throw one of the buckles into the pot when he's not lookingsubtlelaugh.gif

Thanks again, my friends.

I do not see why it would not work. Works for screws and hands, so should work for buckles.

The following link has a good description on how to get the process right: http://www.bhi.co.uk/aHints/bluing.html
