Any one else been completely unable to change the strap on their Sea Devil. I find the big lug screws incredibly tight. Has any body encountered this and how did they get round it?

I've failed to shift it a couple of times already and slipped and I'm worried that the screw will get ruined completely if I slip again. see picture

Just to clarify I've managed to unscrew the ones that hold the links together, its just the bigger ones that I can't shift.

Yeah I used the supplied drivers, but I can't shift them at all. What do you mean the tape off the screws?

I guess it was over torqued at the manufacture, i had no problem at all changing my strap.

Oscar, since you seems to have a lot of experience with watches (and a crazy collection ) what do you mean by "that's what happens when you don't tape off the screws 1st..." I guess you have a trick not to damage the lugs or the screws?  I usually don't have problems changing strap but i'm always open to new ideas and tricks.  Thanks for sharing!hand6.gif

Parabola, if not too late, this might do it: put a drop of WD-40 (use the liquid version, not the spray) on the screw head, let it dry a bit and using the manufacturer-supplied driver, gently unscrew it. I have never done this with a watch screw before but I usually do that to my kids' toys. And it has never failed me at all.:)

Gentlemen, any comments? Would the WD-40 trick work? Hope this helps, Parabola.

Parabola - The screws on mine were extremely tight as well. I had to be extremely careful when removing them. They were the hardest screws I have ever had to remove. I thknk I ended up using screw drivers that were a little larger than the ones that came with it in order to have no movement in the slot.

I suppose I could send a PM to Steve or Ralf but does anyone know offhand if they sell spare parts--especially screws and pins?

Thanks guys I'll give WD40 and a larger driver ago. I think I'll get a watch clamp as well to ensure it doesn't move. BTW thanks for the tip re teflon tape.

if you use the masking tape it fill the slot of the screw and adds to the secure fit of the driver...allow the driver to punture the tape you apply...some use 2 sided tape and that even secures the driver better from what I have been toldhand6.gif

This is the kind of 'gold' I frequent forums for. I think this will be especially useful for those of us with the PVD screws to prevent creation of shiny spots on the screws.

Alas, I will need to order a couple more pvd lug screws and pins. Would Steve have these, or do I need to go direct to Ralf? PM's will be sent to them shortly to find out.

At first I had the same problem, until I approached from the opposite side, removed the the screw cap and tapped out the  seized lug shaft with a toothpick.

Thanks for the tefon tape tip.

Unfortunately I can't even twist my screw out... Yet

Thing is I love the bracelet and I probably wouldn't bother changing had they not supplied me :)

Something you can try. Using a hair blow dryer heat the lugs some and try the screws. The heat in some cass can help slightly expand the metal enough to loosen a screw. Will not hurt the watch. I've done this on dozens of them. Great for loosening up loctite also. ;)

FYI, if you damage or lose the PVD screws or pins you can only replace them with stainless steel screws and pins (according to Ralf, as there was no extra PVD hardware ordered due to high cost of these items to be PVD'd). So those of you with PVD watches please take extra care to not scratch or lose your screws when changing straps! Of course, the stainless ones work just the same, just shiny silver instead of black.

Skip's suggestion is good - it's probably just loc-tite holding on a bit too much.

Heat can sometimes help (so, for example, sometimes I run or dunk under hot water for 5-10 minutes, or try a hair dryer), & then just slow steady gentle torque.  A strip of masking tape or painters tape on the outside of the lugs can help protect the case from scratches.  If you can figure out a way to tape the watch down or have someone hold the case while you use two hands, one to hold the screwdriver on one side steady and the other to turn the second screwdriver on the other side, that also helps a lot (and you have to use two screwdrivers, one on each side, or it just turns the tube in place).  I use a Bergeon 6730 tool, which is great, but they run about $100 so prob not worth it for an individual.

If you continue to have trouble, take it to a nearby jeweler… many will undo it for free, but even those who charge will only charge you $15-20.  It should only be difficult the first time.

Sorry mate, those screws should have used a screwdriver greater than the supply coming.
Congratulations on the clock!

Yeah I tried the hairdryer (its surprising how hot that makes the metal). I'll try Mr Bali Ha'i suggestion, if I'm still struggling I'll get a jewellers to remove them and then get Ralf to send me a couple of replacement screws with the Moray I have on order, just t oimprove the asthetic.

Cheers Guys

The screws on mine were a  little difficult to shift first time -- I found a "third hand" helped to hold the watch whilst I used the two screwdrivers.

Interestingly though I didn't see any evidence of Loctite on the screws.

This has made me  wonder should I be applying a small ammount of Loctite after I have changed the strap on my Sea Devil?

MINE ALSO WILL NOT BUDGE,THEY ARE BY FAR THE TIGHTEST SCREWS IVE EVER HAD TO DEAL WITH IN A WATCH,AFTER A COUPLE TRIES I GAVE UP BEFORE I RUINED SOMETHING. I DO THINK A DROP OF W-D40 MIGHT WORK. NOT SURE THOUGH.  STEVE
