Those taxes are made of political greed... Anything who's builded in another country is taxed allready in this same country. Put on that the different elements from this product who may have been taxed in them other country of origin(importation) ,plus the new taxes applicated to the builder for them....At list 3 times taxed or even more.
Offcourse, it's to avoid traffic on large scale who could break down the fair exchange policies : But from that, why any private who import on single scale should pay taxes from so low valuable goods??? This is not any money who fill up the system off any country: It just pay the custom workers, them offices, them electricity, them bonuses and so on...
Because the drugs and illegal goods they stop don't pay back.
At the end and to resume: We just pay taxes to get steroids stoped at the customs of our post offices.
Still, they can't stop the rest who run our streets...
That's it: I emptied my bag

It looks like we are lucky for once in Canada.  We usually pay tones of taxes here,  and Quebec is the province were the taxes is the highest of the G7 (47% of my salary goes to the government  plus 13% of tax we pay on almost anything we buy),  and the highest in America :X.  Not only it cost us 10 to 20 % more because we pay with CND, depending on rate exchange but fees are also usually expensive...So far I never had to pay 1cent in customs for any of my 4 Benarus because of the $50 value on the invoice.  So it's not bad that you guys in th UK had to pay 14 pound (which is $30CND!) but 14 pound for a 50$ value is a lot IMHO.  The onlything that matters anyway, his that you got your Megalodon, congratulations!

Danny! Before Norway was declared "The best land to live in" it was Canada who had it best;)
And you are in the best part of Canada: With the best Beers! Hahaha!
Now I pay 36% tax on salary and it's enough for my taste because we may have the most expensives cars in the world (the last Grand-Cherokee Jeep will cost you 4 times more in Norway than in US. As 180 000$ with today's change), pay 2.4 US$/liter gasoline and any alcoholic beverage cost 2,5 times the usual price than any other European countries. I will not name the rest coz everything is expensive in Norway: Exept Hi.Fi maybe...
:P
