Just joined the site.  I have been looking for a new watch, interested in an aviation style watch, but can't afford the big ones ie. Breitling.  In doing my research I found all of these small? watch brands.  I find this new world very fascinating.  I am trying to stay away from the big names like Seiko and Citizen.  I am very interested in the new Bali'Hai models.
About me - Coast Guard aviator moving from Jax to Mobile to transition to the CG's newest aircraft. Can't wait to browse this site more.

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I guess I have a few questions not sure where to put them, so I will put them in here.

Quartz vs Automatic, I notice a ton of real nice watches, why are automatics better?  I have a couple of Hamilton's that are quartz and like them alot, and of course the old Timex iron man for work.  Are automatics more durable than quartz?

What about some brands, Reactor?  Sector?  Deep Blue?  MTM?  Are Deep Blue and MTM's the same case?  They look the same.

What about Luminox?  I am looking at getting one, but I am surprised they have the non-metal cases, and have read some band reviews on some sites.

I guess that is a good place to start.  Thanks...

Oh yeah I am real interested in the Bali Hai Project Q model, can't afford the current dive model.  Thanks.

Skullzero96, let me just answer your questions regarding quartz and automatics, ok? I will let the others on this forum jump in at their leisure.

Before I started collecting real watches (long before facebook and global warming), I was all into quartz watches. I think I had about 10 or so pieces varying in brand from Seiko to Swatch and Sacom to Timex. Then as I had some extra funds, I started to research about watches and talked to other people who were known to be serious collectors and watchaholics. My extensive research and the advice received from "elders" pointed me to go automatics and/or hand winding mechanical watches. That was about 25 years ago.

In short, automatics tend to appreciate over long periods of time, generally last much, much longer and are just very simply, harder to make therefore are more collectible.

Now, the only quartzes that I have are the "hand me downs" from my sons (mostly Swatch) and an old Timex runner's watch (the one that beeps to pace your stride and speed).

If you want a brand-to-brand comparison, just PM me. I don't want to start a war with the others on the forumtoon1.gif.

Hope this helps. :)
