Do you ever feel out of control with the buying and collecting? Do you spend WAY more for watches in a year than rent? Has your collecting ever come between you and your family? Do you have a whole room in your house devoted to your collection? Have you ever bought at an inappropriate time...during a significant life event, birth, death of a family member? How about reading and posting instead of sleeping? Have you ever promised you would stop, but kept buying anyway? Do you fight about the money with your spouse? Do you hang out on these forums while your child's first days are passing by? Do you hide your purchases? Would you ever give up every watch you owed to repair the trust with your family? These are just things a watch widow wants to know.

No...I don't... When my account is dry, I don't reach the credit-card to buy a new watch. I don't hide anything, I sleep: If I'm awake at night, it's not for posting specialy. Posting takes it's time and one man can't do it all for sure but a post can wait.
Don't have a watch shrine: It's a passion, not a religion...
A watch is an accessory , not an organ.
There's a difference between collecting and hording.
I don't see myself as a collector anyway: I buy a watch I like, I don't need the whole serial. I choose carefully, I don't buy because I need to buy.
Temptation is never as strong as a will-power: Someone tells you the opposite, he/she lies to you and to him/herself.
I can drink 5 whisky glasses , go on Ebay and only buy a 25$ strap.
I think you got my point. But I recognise that not everybody is thinking or acting the same way...

I aspire to be more like Will!

I have been guilty of some of the above indiscretions but - by and large - not at the expense of my family. I made a purchase once that should not have happened and I rectified it shortly after.

Now my purchases are in cash and when I have had a few to drink, I desire my wife, food, or more drink - although not necessarily in that order. I have never bought a watch / watch accessory p*ssed.

GUILTY as charged on some of the above stuff but never anything that affects the family.....purchases, in general, to mark certain milestones and achievements. I have also been thinning the herd lately and proceeds from the sales quietly go back to things for the house.

Spending on watches also removes funds from engaging in inappropriate behaviour

I appreciate everyone's replies, puts things in perspective for me. Would anyone here ever go down to just a "normal" number, say pare down the collection to 5 pieces? How would you deal with your significant other having issues with your extensive collection.

If it became an issue, the collection would go!

As for your other question, I would happily live with just three watches. I reckon I could do it with a G-Shock, an Emperor Tuna, and a DSSD. And, if push came to shove, I reckon I could do away with the first two and the DSSD would cover all bases.

I have maybe 35 watches... Don't mean to come at 50 or more.
It never been eating my budget.
I guess watches start to be a trouble for the other half when there's only watches to eat on the table and they resell with loss.
I never lost money reselling watches : Because I was making great deals from the start.
But I don't flip them often...
I also build my watches and save money there.
My other half don't need my money anyway, she makes as much as me or better... And I'm a guy who pays the bills before having fun: Not the opposite.

Destructive behavior like the kind you've described sounds more like someone with underlying addiction issues that just happen to manifest itself in collecting watches.  The hiding of purchases is a good sign that they know they shouldn't do something, especially if they promised to give it up, and may reflect this inability to stop.

To be fair, some of the things do seem coincidental (the timing of an ebay auction ending v. family event), or simply the part of the hobby (posting with friends on forums at night).  Many people on here will confess to making impulsive buys (damn WatchRecon), but I'd like to think that most purchases would not lead to financial difficulties or that agreed budgets would be ~mostly~ followed.

Not my place, but it may call for professional help, as your attempts to force a stop to the behavior or the sell off of watches will allow your SO to direct frustration/resentment at you without addressing the underlying cause.

Good luck.

Sounds pretty destructive

I intend to limit my collection to two watches: gen panerai 6152/1, gen big crown Rolex. Maybe a swatch beater....

Stopped by for a quick chat and now the coffee's cold?

The people here are some of the nicest and most honorable you will meet.

Ask a serious question here and you will get a serious answer. Sorry that you haven't read enough here to understand that yet.
Obsession is, IMHO, destructive in all it's many manifestations. Collecting is usually not. Common sense should always prevail. If something happens which jeopardizes the family, then it's time to change priorities. No watch is worth a marriage or a family. Time spent on a hobby can get to be excessive, but there is generally an underlying psychology which allows the obsession to substitute for something missing in other parts in ones life. Hammer is right.
