Does anybody here use/collect fountain pens? I've recently taken an interest in them and was curious about the subject. Like... What got you started? Your favorite pen? Modern or Vintage? Why to all the above? My wife LOOooovvvees pens and it has gotten me curious.

Hey Murph, I wouldn't say I was a collector but have definitely accumulated a bunch of pens over the years, mostly MontBlanc...the funny thing is I never even use any of them anymore...they just sit in the safe. I am a big iPad user, don't even carry a pad of paper or real pen with me...just the iPad and a stylus. Really wish some of the high end pen companies made a nice stylus that looked like a high end pen...so far have not seen one.

My wife has 3 Mont Blancs, all of which I procured for her. Her job requires quite a bit of paperwork, so they're a natural fit for her. My job doesn't really require a lot of writing. Due to her enthusiasm for pens in general(she'll tell you she's a pen whore. lol), I've gotten pretty curious about them. I think maybe the allure of a fountain pen is much like a mechanical watch. Quartz/digital is typically cheaper and easier for telling the time, but there's something satisfying about telling time using old school technology that will last a lifetime when cared for. Same with the fountain pen. I can get a cheap Bic to write with, but putting the care and effort to use a pen as my Grandfather did, would seem to be a bit more substantive somehow.

Jeff, 15 years ago I used to collect Mont Blancs and would use either blue gray ink or green. I also collected Mont Blanc Meisterstucks and even roller balls. Then I added Watermans and then went back to Mont Blancs and then stopped about 6 years ago. Not a serious collector but I found out I liked to have those heavy stuff in my shirt pocket. I gave some to my brother and to my sons though. I think I have 2 more in the vault and every 6 months or so, I "bleed" them in warm water. I use ball point pens or roller ball pens nowadays. Don't go overboard when you go into pens.
