The WC on SAH keeps saying the the 2824 they put in the new SeaPro Worldtimer is the "top of the line" ETA Platinum 2824 movement.  I do not think he is referring to the chronometer certified grade, is he referring to the 'Top" grade.

In everything I've looked at online I see no reference to "Platinum" and 2824 movements....I'm guessing this is the WC imbelishing (not that there is anything wrong with that).

I believe the new Boschett Reef Ranger uses the "Top" grade, wondering if it is the same movement in the SP.

Nick

Nick

Someone smarter than me will chime in, but there are different grades. From low to high: Asian, gold, Rodium, Platinum. They differ in materials used, shock protection, springs etc.

I am not an expert so this is what I know.

This is what it says on Wikipedia, and I've seen similar references other places...if the SP does have what is refereed to as the "Top" grade at under $500 that sounds like a pretty good deal.

ETA 2824 One workhorse of the ETA mechanical line is the ETA 2824-2, The 2824 is an automatic winding, twenty-five (25) jewel movement, available in four executions or grades: Standard, Elaborated (improved), Top and Chronometer[5]. The key components which differ at the line of demarcation between Elaborated and Top are the barrel spring, shock protection system, pallet stones, balance wheel & hairspring and the regulator mechanism. To illustrate the differences in accuracy garnered by the successive grades, consider the following specifications: the Standard grade is adjusted in two positions with an average rate of +/-12 seconds/day with a maximum daily variation of +/-30 seconds/day; the Elaborated grade is adjusted in three positions with an average rate of +/-7 seconds/day with a maximum daily variation of +/-30 seconds/day; while the Top grade is adjusted in five positions with an average rate of +/-4 seconds/day with a maximum daily variation of +/-10 seconds/day. The Chronometer grade must meet strict standards prescribed by the COSC. Chronometer grade movements are serial numbered as that is a requirement of the certification authority. Moreover, it should be noted that the degree of decoration on the movement's parts, generally only an aesthetic improvement, increases as well with the grade.[6]

The term "Platinum" refers to the finish of the movement....the platinum series eta is considered the top grade eta(non chronometer grade) and it is used in the SeaPro World Racer Danny spoke of on the show which I ownhand6.gif...there is also a "Gilded" or gold standard,a nickle finish, and fully decorated elabore but this does not mean they are chronometer grade which are predominately used in COSC certified watches and uses a better balance wheel and shock system to meet the high standards set by COSC....here is a link to a good tutorial on eta grades as well as how to detect a chronometer grade movement as well as what is a better shock system and balance wheel as all eta's are not created equal posted here on 3T some time ago....if you use the search engine here you will find pages of info on eta movements, grades and finishes...what to look for and what to avoid....also if you check the links section of 3T you will find Dr.Rannfts complete guide to all watch movementswatch2.gif

Here's another picture of the one I just received. The movement does have the flared spokes on the balance wheel of the top movement.

Ordered my World Racer last night from SAH, went to the web site this morning to show my wife what I ordered (I know I'm lucky, she actually supports my addiction) and it is no where to be found....must be sold out.

So I go to my order status and it shows "back ordered", hopefully I'll still get it....so much for paying the extra $10 for "quick shipping"
