More newbie questions. smile8.gif How much does the standard "clean and lube" for an automatic watch cost? I've read enough now to know that you should do this every 5 years or so. I am going to guess that on some less expensive watches, it may be better financially to just toss the watch after 5 years and buy a new one. ![]() Last edited on Wed Mar 19th, 2008 12:41 pm by Rick5 |

Rick, Depends on the movement, but I would say from around $60 for a Seiko type movement all the way up. I had a 7750 serviced for $160 which included some new parts....it's on an individual basis.

Cool. That's actually less than I expected. I assume my new Orient (my first non-Quartz watch) is probably going to be closer to $60? I am really enjoying this watch a lot. I'm hooked! I already have my sights on my next automatic. I really love the Stowa Antea 365. Any advice on how to convince my wife to allow me to spend > $1,000 on a watch?

if it works, don't throw it out! You'll be surprised how much mileage you can get between tune-ups; if ever! Marc Rick5 wrote: it may be better financially to just toss the watch after 5 years and buy a new one.

or if you still don't want to get the tune up, sell 'em cheap... one man's trash is another man's treasure. Not like I'm talking about my treasure or anything! ;) IW wrote: if it works, don't throw it out! You'll be surprised how much mileage you can get between tune-ups; if ever!

My personal belief about watch services is that it is a myth made up by watchmakers to get continued work. I have one watch 44 years old, never been serviced, runs fine...and here is the bottom line: if something breaks, send it in and have it fixed. It will be serviced then and the parts cost will be negligible to continued, unneeded periodic servicing. I have only had my Rolex serviced when it got some moisture under the crystal and my wife's automatic Cartier de Santos when the stem came out. Where them, enjoy them, get them serviced and fixed when they break unless it is more cost effective to replace...Don't worry; be happy! smile8.gif

For Christmas 2007,my dad gave me my grandpa's 1958 Octo Missilemaster 30 Jewel Automatic. My dad had spend $230 on cleaning and replacing the crystal, the watchmaker even added the original Octo crown for free. I'll give a review of the watch in the near future. Simon
