I got the day off for Easter so I decided I check out a couple of high end retailers, to see what's available. I've walked into Jewelery Shop "A". The sales lady approached me and I told her about my budget and the type of watch movement I was looking for. She took out a watch, one from each major brand name. There was a Longines Conquest Automatic Chronograph, Rado Original Diastar Automatic Diver, Tissot SeaStar Automatic 1000 and Couple of Omegas: 1) Seamaster Automatic 2) Seamaster Automatic Chronograph. The Seamaster Chronograph, was on cosignment for $2,200. She calculated the taxes for me on each watch to assist me with my budget. I introduced myself, she kindly smiled and did the same-she then handed me her business card. I walked away happy because she took her time to help me with my decision. Jewelery Shop "B" I walked in there and the all the sales staff were talking amongst themselves. I walked over to the Porsche Design Display, staring at the watches for at least 10 minutes. "May I help you?" a voice said behind me. I turned around and the sales lady, walked up beside me. She pointed to a co-worker standing behind the display case to open it. "How much is this Porsche Design?" "$3250 but there is a 40% discount." The lady standing behind the display case calculated the watch with both sales tax. In a typical Chinese Salesmanship "Buy today and I'll include the taxes." "Ok since I'm here let me take a look at the brand names to compare?" I kindly asked. "No, problem?" she answered. I walked over to the Oris Display Case and the Jean Richard Display Case. By this time, I was left alone with no help from anyone. The next display was the Breitling and finally I walked out after 5 minutes. No business card, no thanks for coming in and no goodbye. The sales lady from Store "A" was taking a break when I walked up. " Any luck?" she kindly asked. "No, I went upstairs to see what's available but Store "B" the sales staff were reluctant to assist me. I walked away empty handed-not even a business card or a goodbye." "Well at least you were kind enough to help with me and I sincerely thank you." I said to her. "You're welcome, by the way I'm the manager of Store A, if you need anything please feel free to call me." She replied. "I will." I answered and went home. The feeling I got from Store A, was that I was not being pressured in any way to buy. Nothing is worse than an agressive salesperson, forcing you to make a purchase right at that minute.

Yea I don't care for pushy sales people. I will often just ignore them if they get that way. But sounds like you had some fun looking. ;)

I learned quite a bit today, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad experience-and not let the bad ones ruin your day. Yes,it was fun and seeing all those watches, was like being a kid in toy store. Choosing to find the right one however, is like buying a car. The process is daunting, the decision making process is a chore and once you bought the watch the depreciation sets in after a year or so. I guess we do it because: A) Watches are cheaper to collect than cars. B) One watch is never enough. C) Men tend to compete with fellow men to see who has the better watch. My family background. Paternal Grandfather was a watchmaker in Hong Kong, my dad's late uncle in Hong Kong built watch cases for a living,my dad's older brother collects watches,my dad owns several watches, mom has a Cartier and I'll wear quality timepieces that are either German or Swiss Made below $5,000 and I haven't bought a single quartz watch, since I received a 1977 Digital Pulsar watch in grade 2. See what they did to me?

The service you received at store A is what you should expect. Helpful without being pushy and she actually listened to you rather than trying to sell to you.

Hi Paxman, I sincerely hope that you've meant that I'm twisted in a good way. LOL. It's not my fault that my dad's side of the family were either watchmakers, case makers for watches and watch collectors. If it weren't for my upbringing as to how a manual-wind watch works and how an automatic watch works. I might still be wearing that 30 + year old Digital Pulsar and thinking to myself "Man,what a great watch! Press a button and the black screen lights up alike an airport runway." Simon
