Hi 3T'ers. I have been looking at MKII Stingray watches lately, and am impressed with the bang for the buck they seem to offer - especially since the 42mm version can be made to look like the BP Fifty Fathoms with a bit of "selective breeding" when you order off their website. I am attracted to bright, shiny, and distinctively minimalist. My girl thinks that is why I am with her... :) Anyway - I have 2 questions: 1. why are the MKIIs I have seen available on the fora available second hand for roughly the same price as a new one off the shelf from the manufacturer? (in other words, why would I buy a second-hand one to save 30 bucks?) and 2. does anyone have any experience with how good they are? I can remember a post a cupla months ago with a terrific looking incoming Stingray, but no longer term comments on how well they wear/last/keep time and if any SS bracelets are available to suit them. Many thanks in advance for any thoughts from owners - and if the topic is unacceptable discussion on the forum, please feel free to PM me and kick the topic to the kerb, cos it is mainly for my education anyway - cheers all - IanM ![]()

Well Ian I'll let you know anytime now!! I guess I am like you in that I was attracted to the watch and see it as an homage to the old school FF. I placed a WTB advert here and at MWF and had a few responses none of which had the exact configuration I wanted but which were darn close. I want this: ![]() I was talking to another forum member about purchasing his for $525. The direct sales price sis $565 + shipping. Not a great savings and he wouldn't budge. I decided the 6 months of warranty he had chewed up were worth $40 to me so I placed an order. Not worth the minimal saving imo. So I'll be glad to give you my opinion on the watch if I ever get it. I ordered it back on 3/25. I didn't get shipped before Yao went to Basel and still is not moving. They were not able to get the watch sent out in the 5 business days prior to them leaving for Basel and aren't moving too quickly since their return. I just last night asked for upgraded shipping so that I could expect the watch this week. No response as of yet. I am hoping the CS improves and they perform a bit of service recovery. The other thing to consider is that Yao told me he is getting to the end of the pre-built watches so I wouldn't dilly-dally. Tony Duronio has one. He has assured me it will be well worth the wait. I plan on using it in what I hope is a warm summer here in the Northern Hemisphere.:D Stay cool, literally and figuratively!! I'll give you more info when I get the piece.

Pax - you are a legend, thanks so much. In this watch, our tastes seem identical. You got my point about the small reduction in prices - seems to make no sense. And the standard design watches are available "off the shelf" most of the time. So sorry you are going through the "Basel-syndrome" by which I mean that every watchmaker leaves their business in limbo for a week while they go and look for ideas to generate new business ![]() My latest incoming is a mint (not NOS) black-faced Omega SM120 f300Hz diver. Wanted one for ages and found an Aussie seller who wanted to let his go. It has blown the budget a little for the second quarter of the year - but it has forced me to look outside the box a little at some alternative watches I like. There is something visually striking about the Stingray that just gets into your blood. It does everything, in a minimalist way, and looks like a million bucks. It isn't just that it evokes the FF (though few would appreciate that anyway, other than WISs like us!) it is a very classy design in its own right. I am not a rubber strap fan - so maybe a polished SS bracelet is all that it needs to be absolutely perfect IMHO. Oh cr*p - I just imagined how good it would look on Omega mesh.... ![]() Once again this forum has proved to be a very a friendly place to be - thanks so much for your input. I look forward to your thoughts on the incoming 60 - and of course I will post some photos of the new SM120 when it arrives - or "borrow" shots from the seller to post them quickly! Cheers Pax - IanM ![]() ![]()

I love that watch & guess I'd better get off my butt, too...I imagine the high secondary market price is because of the limited # of watches available. They are not being produced in volume and even the pre-built models are "hand-made".

Hiya Ken. You're probably right. Off the butt time for me, too. But I would be interested to hear Pax's views on the pre-built 60 before jumping in. Surely it can't take much longer for CS at Yao's to get Pax the piece he would have undoubtedly paid for on order? Can they Pax? ![]() Cheers! IanMhand6.gif

I got a response telling ,e I would have the watch this week and then FedEx tracking info. Seems Yao upgraded the shipping. Tracking says I will have it today by 1900 though at last look it was in Indiana. You'll have an opinion PDQ!

Hey Pax, I'm interested in what you think too. I've talked the wife into letting me have enough funds for one more purchase before the baby gets here, and I'm seriously eyeballing the MKII Stingray.

Hi murphy j Gee whiz your wife is a good woman! Oh - and congrats in advance on the new baby!! Which MkII Stingray interests you most? That Stingray 60 beauty posted above by Pax is deffo the one, IMHO. If Pax likes it - I am positive I will, too, cos he holds nothing back if it is a fizzer. Perhaps a twofer deal with yao? ![]() Have a good one! IanM hand6.gif Last edited on Thu Apr 17th, 2008 09:58 am by IanM |

I like them all, but the 12 hour GMT bezel is probably the most practical! http://www.mkiiwatches.com/WSWrapper.jsp?mypage=cd01ch_mod1.htm

Actually, I went ahead and pulled the trigger:). I went for a custom built Stingray 70. It'll have the Bund II dial and hands w/red tipped sweep, bead blasted case, AR sapphire xtal, diamond marker at the 12 elapsed time bezel insert, date at the 4:30 w/black wheel and white numbers and nato strap. I realize of course that the 12hr GMT is the more practical bezel, but was going for something with a bit more a traditional BP FF look. 24 week lead time right now, so I won't have it in my hot little hands anytime soon. I also had to agree to no more watches while on this deployment:(, boy is it gonna be a looonnngg wait till Oct.
