I want to get a watch for a buddy of mine. He owns a body shop/car lot and has given me tons of business over the years. Not to mention just being a great friend. He dropped off his personal vehicle today and I noticed his luminox was broken. He is a scuba diver and I want to get him a diver. What color dial shows up best underwater? I know yellow is his favorite color but, how does it fair underwater?

Back in the last century, when I was diving, yellow was thought to be the last visable color at depth. However, I've read recently that Doxa conducted some studies and determined orange was the most visible color at depth. Whichever you decide, you friend is a lucky guy, to have a buddy like you.

Scot either yellow or orange make for great dial colors underwater for recreational divers and black is still the color of choice preferred by most divers...red is the color that disappears quickest....lume is what drives most today so that is what you would want....in the lower end $ wise the Seiko Monsters are still hard to beat in a dive watch and lume is well documented on the forums....in the mid to higher end there is a bevy of brands, styles, depth ratings and size variations available depending on your budget...if he prefers quartz...Luminox is still a good choice with the tubeshand6.gif

Thanks O. I know he does a lot of cave diving so lume is very important. I didnt want to get him another luminox as he has said that water has gotten into during dives. Its a 200m. I was thinking a 300m.

I was thinking a 300m. Yea at the very least 300M for a diver. To me 200M or less is for the swimming pool or snorkling. 100M is for the shower. LOL :D I'm a desk diver now but did do some of the real deal when in the Navy. Though that was 20+ years ago.:) I asked a friend of mine in Seattle who dives and he said he prefers a black dial with good heavy C3 lume. Right now he has a Swiss Army Dive Master 500 he uses and likes it.;)

The monster being a 200 meter diver is under-rated ........ I think .... I would trust it to dive and not fail, right up with a 300 meter diver ....

I agree w/CJ....200m is plenty for diving especially when just a couple of years ago that was the norm for divers and unless your friend is doing deep dives of more than 175 ft the 200m/330 ft rating should be plentyhand6.gif ....because your friends Lumi leaked probably had nothing to do with the depth rating but more of a issue of lack of maintenance and seals being maintained or as simple as the screw down crown leaked.....what is you $ budget as this will help in finding the best bang for the buck Scot watch2.gif

Scott, I have to agree with the rest of the guys. The Seiko Monster is a hell of a dive watch for the price. Some of the Lumi's have a rep for seals failing due to needed maintenance and I believe crown/stem failure issues on some of the older ones.
