I am getting quite irritated with the fact that some of my watches tend to develop a smudgy film on the inside of the crystal. This is almost invisible unless the watch is inspectd in bright sunlight - then a thin film can clearly be seen, causing the crystal to look "dirty". I have had two watches opened and cleaned professionally recently for that very reason. Each time it turns out to be quite expensive. (Labour & seals) My watchmaker says that this is becoming more of a problem lately with the type of oils used to lubricate the movement. They tend to evaporate more than the older type oils. Admittedly our temperatures here probably help too! Anybody else with similar tales? I don't want to single out any particular brand because I've had this happen to both expensive and cheaper watches. Your feedback will be interesting. It doesn't have to be the oils either, it can also be the paints, lume etc on the dials and plastics off gassing too. My Invicta Ossie divers were fogged out of the box, Miyota movement and MOP dials.

I've noticed this as well and have attributed it to the AR coating being mis-applied or just age...my B&R had it and was sent for service in which they reaplied the AR coatinghand6.gif ....only with an Invicta did I have the oily residue on the 1st OGII's which I think many had as well

I only experienced this once. It was a bad crown seal. Water got inside. Probably a little different than a light transparent film forming though. Makes me wonder if humidity levels inside watch workshops and factories are monitored and kept low to help alleviate this possibility?

The early Alphas (Chinese) were famous for this. I had to take two apart and clean the crystal from the inside. The problem did not repeat itself after the cleaning. This is a differant problem from a rainbow that develops from a defective AR coating which cannot be cleaned off but has to have the coating be re-applied, which I had on my Brietling SO.
