Looks like I'm getting engaged in June. I sold a couple of watches and I'm still trying to offload more before I buy the ring. Ironically, I might be getting an engagement watch from my gf's family. I'm trying to figure out what would be good. I typically like bigger diving watches, but this would probably be an heirloom. Furthermore, I would not ask for something crazy expensive, like a Breitling or an Omega Co-Axial. I have been looking at the following:

1) Oris Carlos Coste Small Seconds (Orange markers, black face/bezel)
2) Longines Master Chronograph (white dial, silver subdials, blue numerals, stainless case/bracelet).
3) Doxa Sub 750T (this is way out of the price range, I know).
4) Fortis Square

Any suggestions for good heirloom watches which are stainless, automatic (Swiss), sapphire, with a white or black face?

To give you an idea of my tastes, I currently own an Omega Seamaster Automatic (full size, Bond), a Vintage silver Omega Constellation automatic, a bead blasted Benarus Sea Devil and a Seiko Kinetic diver (black on silver).

Thanks!

All 4 there you mention are great watches but for such a gift I myself would likely lean towards the Longines. It's a watch with heritage and tradition. But again any of those 4 if you like them ask for what you would prefer to have if they ask you what you would like. ;)

Agree with Skip - I'd probably drop out the Oris & the Fortis if you're thinking long-term/heirloom.  The Doxa is cool, would be my choice but I'm a dive nut, & it's less classical than the Longines.  You might also look at the Longines Legend diver, which would blend the two ideas.  If you're looking for slightly less expensive diver alternative to the Doxa, you might look at Stowa... thought of it just because I'm wearing one today, but they are rock-solid, vintage sensibilities, and priced around $1k.

To me the Omega AquaTerra would be the watch of choice, but not real sure of the budget. You probably can find one gently used for under $1500. If that's way off I would look at Hamilton....to me for this occasion I would go with a dressier piece like there Viewmatic line  or there Ventura model.

AquaTerra here.... http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=msg&goto=4478204&rid=9152#msg_4478204

I did look at the Aqua Terra. Very nice, but I'd prefer new since the heirloom starts with me. I think I want to keep it under $1200, which makes it hard to do a Longines. I did look at the Hamilton Khaki Action Chrono, but it's not exactly an heirloom type.

Sadly, yes. She was in shock when she first saw how many watches I owned (8). Then I bought two more without her knowing and she was flippin' mad. But she knows I've made changes (and sold some watches), so she says she wants to get me one if we have enough funds after all the planning is done. No promises, though. I just want to get excited and do my research now, in case my ship comes in. ;)

Congratulations on the engagement!  Here are my 2 cents worth; give her 3-5 different types/styles and let her pick the one she wants to give to you.  As you know an heirloom is anything that you and your family decide is worthy of being passed down generation to generation.  My final piece of advice, be sure and give plenty of hints as to which watch you really would like to receive so as to remind you of her.

Wow, I didn't intend to be so serious.  Good luck getting the watch that means the most to you and your fiance, cheers.

I like Stormin's suggestion. Since they are giving the gift it is up to them to decide what the gift should be. Give them a number of alternatives and see what you end up with... And congratulations on the engagement.woohoo.gif
