Hi,
I checked the Kobold Homepage out and I really like those dive watches!
I was just a little surprised about the prices, the watches are expensive compared to other dive watches discussed here! Can somebody explain to me, what makes them more expensive?

The arctic diver heritage is really great, but, as I said, a bit expensive!

Are they worth the money? Where do you buy'em? Is there a cheaper address than the official Kobold site?

Thank you

They are very handsome watches!

Anyone's high watch prices are a function of people's willingness to pay more than inherent worth of materials(*).  So you have to decide for yourself if it is worth it or not.  I have heard you can find them for sale used, online for half (or less) the MSRP, so while I can't comment on "value" of them as new, I love their look, and they appear to be well made.  They are also (mostly) made in the US which may be worth something to some people.

I will say for the same price range as them, you can purchase of a watch with an entirely in-house movement from other watch makers - which is worth checking out.

But at the end of the day, if you want a Kobold watch, you would be best getting one if you can afford it.  I personally love their design, and plan to add one one day to my small but growing collection but I find them rather puzzling expensive, too.

(*) I think it is also helpful to compare Kobold to higher end watchmakers for reference.  While they are not a "manufacture" - and buy their watch movements rather than make them - I think they are positioning themselves as a competitor of Rolex for the people who appreciate the Rolex but want something a little bit different but more rugged.  I htink it is helpful to compare them to Sinn.  And for an example on how expensive watches can get you can look at Jaeger LeCOultre, Blancpain and Patek Phillipe - and those 3 houses are not in the same league as Kobold, realize that Kobold isn't trying to price compete with them.

I don't own a Kobold (yet) but I have done some research about their pieces' performance, their relatively young company and the ownership behind the brand. I have also checked into other forums and Kobold is highly regarded particularly for toughness of their creations. For me, they have very notable designs and they seem to niche themselves on being a higher-end tool diver, and as such, hit the market at a particularly higher price point.

Value is relative from WIS to WIS so Bromo33333 hit the bullseye with his view on value. Watch materials may be very similar from model to model and brand to brand --- each one distinguishing itself in one particular way to differentiate itself. But at day's end there are only a few things that really matter to me: 1) the brand's heritage and what it stands for 2) track record of their pieces/movements  and; 3) collectibility value. Just my opinon but hope it helps.;)

Oscar, Trent and a few other WIS on 3T own some Kobolds and they may provide you better and maybe more credible perspectives.

I can honestly say that any WIS that got in on the Arctic Diver anniversary deal picked up a awesome watch at half the going price of a Kobold! hand6.gif

It is by far one of the nicest dive watches I have seen and it excells in all categories from fit&finsh, lume and just overall toughness yet has a very refined look to it which can be dressed up or down...I could'nt be happier and would reccomend WIS to jump on some of the ones being flipped on the sales forums. yahoo.gif
