Okay WIS's, do you know when the Seiko Orange Monster made its debut? I just bought a used one from a friend that he got in 2003. Is it an early one?

Cheers,
John

Doing a little looking around it appears they first came out early 2001. ;)

This one is a bit hard to research - but I am with Skip with it being 2001 or maybe even a bit earlier. There is a 2001 model available on another WUS website at present, with no claims to it being the "first production year".

Interesting Q!

Cheers and good luck with the definitive answer! IanM hand6.gif

Thanks gents. I'd say they have a hit on their hands, wouldn't you? Do you think this style of watch will endure like some of the other "classics" out there? Some that come to mind are the Rolex diver style, the Panerai case styles etc.. While I've yet to see an "homage" or copy of the monster, I think it's safe to say it's made an impact on watch design.

The only company that I know who copied (Yep, I would not say homage) the Monster design, is Invicta with the Abyss Diver.  They have a different case but use the same bezel and dial.  Other than that , I would say the Seiko monster is, and will remain a classic.  Its case design is drastic, unique and timeless IMHO.  The first time a saw this watch on the net, I really thought it was ugly and couldn't understand why every single review (and there is tons of them) had so much praised for this not so nice looking watch...Then you buy one on steel bracelet on ebay for $155  and when you hold it in your hands, you understand why.

Monster,  definitely keeper.  It was ugly in 2001.  It's still ugly in 2009 and I love it!  (beautifully ugly I mean subtlelaugh.gif)

Yep! I've got the black and orange and they're not going anywhere. Not sure I want to spring for the boutique colored models, but we'll see.
