I always thought that 'GRAIL' was a kooky term for an ultimate watch, until I obtained my 'GRAIL'...but now that I have, I look over my somewhat modest collection, and ponder.... Do I sell the middle-of-the-roaders that get little or no wrist time (such as my Invicta's and Renato's...?) Do I sell off the vintage from the '60s that were manageable to buy?... Did anybody else encounter a crossroads after achieving their grail? Did you sell off a majority of your collection (that really didn't hold a candle to your new 'GRAIL')? And if so, do you regret it? My wife (believe it or not) does NOT like me talking about condensing the collection; in fact she was mildly upset about using on of my Rolie's as a trade to upgrade to my 'GRAIL'... This is not a solicitation to sell; I am just looking for input and perspectives....Bouncy.gif

I think that it's normal to "look down at the tuna when you been eating salmon"... I didn't achieve my grail yet and sometimes I'm a bit in doubt of what it should be in fact. I guess that there is many grails: The first, the second, the third and so on:D In between, you buy attractive watches. But even somes are not grails, they can be connected to you somehow and very hard to sell anyway: Sentimental value. For me, the real grail is more a totally unique watch who feature all the things you love in the others...;)

For me it's very simple, I've said it before, a watch i'm not wearing, is a watch i don't need. When I start collecting watches, I started with Invicta watches and was very, very happy with them (my first was the 3397 coin hedge bezel and second grand diver, I had five all together). You could get a nice looking watch for little money. Then I stopped wearing them for many different reasons and sold them all. If you are not wearing them, what is the point of keeping them? You have money sleeping that could be used for other watches!!! . Your Invictas and ReNoto are useless in a watch box IMOH. I know that they worth close to nothing on the preown market (unless you have some of the oldest Invicta's, some models still have very good resale value IMO) but if you can get a few hundred bucks for them, why not? And I bet that since you have your grail, the Invita's and ReNoto's do not look that cool anymore, I'm I wrong?...Same for the Vintage. If some do not appeal to you anymore, get rid of them. I think vintage watches might be a bit different and I would keep a vintage watch that I don't wear because of two reasons: 1st: value on the market as a collectors item 2nd: the sentimental value... But Invicta or ReNoto? Nah,bye bye! There is always new collectors outside looking for good deals on them and with the right price, you should be able to get rid of them quickly, I know I had no problem selling mine. Yes I lost money, but at least I don't have them collecting dust, sitting in my watch box...And I got other watches that I'm wearing, with the money. Just my humble opinion :D

Daniel is absolutely right. If you aren't wearing them you don't need them. Now that can get tougher when your collection approaches 75 watches. Impossible to wear them all isn't it? Today's grail may not be tomorrow's grail. Tastes change and mature. Fad watches come and go. When you hit on a grail which will truly become an heirloom watch then it sticks. As for the Invictas and Renatos, if they are sitting idle dump them. As Daniel said you will take a bath as there is little demand for these on the secondary market unless they are priced right and you may have been lucky and grabbed them on an OTV. But they are of no use to you in a box. Every so often I look at my collection and realize perhaps I should consolidate. I could sell a number a moderately priced watches and reinvest that money into something which more closely meets my current desires. However, despite having favorites which get more wrist time in the rotation I still get a great deal of satisfaction from a sweet affordable watch be it something like the Swiss Military I recently picked up or somebody's used beater.;)

LOL ...I completely agree and have had that problem.. Right now my Q (you could consider it a semi-grail hearteyes.gif) is making me have second thought as to how much I like several of my watches and when am I going to wear them, i've been thinking it would be better to sell them off and get the money for my GRAIL!! (BTW it's the MKII Sea Fighter)..

Horses for courses. Ask yourself WHY you are collecting watches. Some people collect brands, others types (divers eg), others simply because they are hoarders. I am a bit of a mixed breed: I collect chrono watches primarily because I'm interested in the different movements. Some of my vintage chronos will never get any wrist time because thay are ridiculously small, but they form an integral part of my collection. Other watches I buy for no particular reason, so I agree that these should be flipped if they become box potatoes. My collection seems to hover around 80, give or take a few. BTW, once again the only rule that applies, is that there is no rule!

Seems as if there are a lot of us that have had this issue to ponder...and everybody makes COMPLETE SENSE, regardless of what you would do with your collection. HOWEVER, since my posting, the exclusivity of my GRAIL LOVE has somewhat grown tepid; I figure I will allow the rest of the collection to continue to sleep until woken for wrist wear. This GRAIL will probably make it's way off my wrist fairly soon... I am tempted, though; to follow the sensible advice from you guys in that if the others don't receive any to little wear, to dispatch with the lonely ones....  D'oh!!!!

I have plunged up to the Deep SeaDweller...and this is quite a leap up from the two-tone Submariner that I had. Well built (as one could imagine) but rather large; even for my 7.80 inch wrists. Perhaps I was used to the Sub I traded. Or I am comparing it to my Yachtmaster. And coincidentally I got a Megalodon AND a Helson Shark Diver right about the same time. Both great watches, but i find myself comparing the Mega with the DSSD, and believe it or not the Mega is VERY well built by comparison...and about 8 grand cheaper.... Haven't taken any pics yet though...

Not sure how one would trump the DSSD? Great watch...great grail. My first watch was a sub...still wear it...ALOT.
