Today at 2 pm EST, I am meeting with someone from the US Government in regards to some grants for my business. Do I wear my Panerai? or will that show too much? Lets assume he is a not a watch guy and has no clue, so do i wear something that will stand out? Do i wear a timex or a seiko to show my frugality? Some advice would be helpful, or at least let me know what you would wear in the same situation.

Excellent question!

I run into this too. I am self employeed. If I wear my Omega to a kickoff meeting, or an interview, people may take it that we are overpaid...

Same thing with the car I drive. I don't drive a Mercedes or BMW. I could if I wanted to, but I go conservative. I have won jobs because another consultant was driving a Mercedes and another one was driving a Porche. It is all in the perception.

So, for interviews, I have worn watches that are a little lesser known such as Oris, Debaufre, UTS, Stowa, etc.. but I stay away from famous expensive watches. Once we get the deal, then I don't pay too much attention to my selection for those meetings.

the only watches I would avoid wearing would be a replica just in case a watch guy does show up....that wouldn't look good for you....otherwise wear what you want as most non WIS have no idea and those that do will have something in common with you if you wear something recognizable.....you are selling yourself at the end of the day as most ideas and products sell themselves...so always put your best wrist forward is my rule of thumb...happy guy.gif

I'd wear the Pam. People who give grants or approve grants are somehow trained to spot certain signals from proponents. If you wear El Grand Cheapo, you'd look like you have very little respect for yourself plus you'd project an image that you hardly can make ends meet.

But regardless of the watch, if your project/proposal is worthy and makes sense, you'll get the grant.

Good Luck, amigoThumbsUp02.gif

I would wear whatever watch made you feel the most confident and competent.  Don't worry about how they might interpret your watch.

And all of you are correct, it is me selling that is going to seal the deal or not. And some watches do make me feel more , Powerful? in control?  My J-SAR, def. a watch that makes me revert back to my military days. But I also think Maybe I should appear a little humble as well. This meeting is worth, well. I wont even say, but its lots. And the main thing is, its not about the money, it could truly mean that i get to help out my fellow man in a great way. That means more to me than anything else. Im not gonna lie, I can barely contain myself. And My Pan DOES match my Shirt that I am wearing....
Worrying about what watch to wear at least is taking my mind off of worrying about the meeting and how well it will go..

Wear what makes you comfortable...I'm not one to cheap down....if you wear a nice watch or drive a nice car it shows you are successful...that should draw people and money to you...not push it away
