BaselWorld 2013: Rolex Launches New Black and Blue GMT-Master II and Platinum Daytona By James Stacey on April 24, 2013 ![]() We're here at BaselWorld 2013 and Rolex has shown off a couple of new model iterations, including a platinum Daytona and this black and blue colored GMT-Master II. Essentially just a new color variation of the current GMT-Master II range, this new version employs a two color cerachrom bezel insert (a first for Rolex) in a day/night arrangement of blue and black. ![]() Still sized to 40mm and powered by the Rolex Calibre 3186, this new model is little more than an additional color choice for buyers look for some of that classic Pam Am panache. Rolex announcements are a big deal at the show and crowds formed quickly when the new models were displayed outside of Rolex's BaselWorld booth. ![]() Alongside the black and blue GMT-Master II is a new blue and brown platinum Rolex Daytona. This is not the Daytona that many were expecting. Also still 40mm, this new version features a case and bracelet made of 950 platinum along with a light blue dial and brown cerachrom bezel. This new version comes on the year of the Daytona's 50th birthday and while the color combo is interesting, many were expecting a brand new model with an updated case size. New colors and metals aside, the platinum Daytona (ref 116505) is powered by the Calibre 4130 COSC automatic chronograph movement with 72 hours of power reserve. ![]() While the new variations of both the Daytona and the GMT-Master II are undoubtedly cool pieces, neither are brand new models, nor do they differ greatly from the current formula for each model range. I rather like the blue and black GMT-Master II and think that it is a nice addition the GMT-Master II family. What do you think of these new versions? Maybe Rolex has something else up its sleeve.

As usual, no new design/size from Rolex... "Rolex announcements are a big deal", only before it's announced apparently. The GMT model looks good. This cosmograph brown-turd/baby-blue is just an ugly mix IMO

My top picks are the new GMT in blue and black and the YM2 in SS. Surely a lot of surprises and even disappointments for some. Many WIS have mixed reviews on the new GMT in black and blue but I love it and will save up for it. The colors work for me. Black and blue.....that's what my face will look like after Mrs Bigrustypig sees this new baby on my wrist. It will be worth it again ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited on Wed Apr 24th, 2013 12:19 pm by bigrustypig |

I like the Black and Blue GMTM2, and now that they've mastered the difficulty in manufacturing a two color ceramic bezel, they will no doubt bring a coke and pepsi ceramic bezel to the party some time in the future. I think the Daytona color combo is interesting, but maybe a bit too "trendy"...but Rolex does produce some trendy/garish versions of some models in the classic Rolex lineup. I was really hoping to see Rolex move to a 42-43mm case for this year of the Daytona's Big 50th Birthday, however.

Yes, that's what I mean: I don't want to feel like I'm getting screwed... I've never been screwed of 5 grands and I don't want to experience it. Considering for me that a Sub isn't worth more than 4 grands including all the glittering about it. I don't give a crap about the popularity of the brand: Specially when I know that most of it was achieved by continual media bombing and myths spread by people who didn't know crap about watches. I'm certainly not impressed either by only 108 years of brand history and the stunts they did with depth records who was already technologically accessible by many brands at the time but just didn't want to use millions$ on that kind of PR. And now that I know they are and been during years in the game to press down FH to impeach a rise of Swissness above 50%, I'm certainly getting very conscious of how much they been using the Swissness law to take down them production cost by integrating eastern outsourced parts. Rolex/Tudor never promised 100% Swiss so they never lied to anybody: They gently followed the law like other mass producers. You want to pay heavy buks for what you get? Buy limited production from transparent small manufactures who don't own or deal with many of those grey companies which you can't trace them parts from. For me, when you produce a million pieces by year, you are an industrial producer and you should pass your low cost production to the consumer. Coz exclusivity is long gone. Rolex holds on it's "exclusivity" by practicing "exclusive" prices and make them ambassadors repeating everywhere that it gives you the best you can find... I'm not a hater: I just don't fancy that kind of exclusivity Oscar. And Yes, I dare to speak out: Rolex isn't holy for me and I'll be first in hell for that. ![]()
