sounds about average for non-watch laymen.  you have to remember that we who carry the watch-bug are the exception not the norm. i know because lots of people who know me say i'm not normal.

i can't count the number of people who ask me why i wear such a big watch when i wear any panny or big pilot. while not a watch snob i do feel much more affable when i am around someone who appreciates the desire to have something somewhat unique and can converse in any way about the craftmanship or design characteristics on current pieces or vintage.

Interestingly, I just picked my boys up from school and a doctor  (orthopod) friend of mine walked up with an orange watch on (he usually wears only Rolex, Cartier or Muller) and I said, "Nice DOXA"..he looked at me wide eyed and siad, "You know what this is?" and I responded, "Sure, just got a Sharkhunter, myself".

PS...I will not tell you what he paid for it as he thought he got quite the deal...you know, as rare as the Orange SUB 750T is!!!:)

I agree.hand6.gif

To be honest, if we really do a survey, not many WIS guys around. Maybe it is just happened what we are members of various watch forums, it seems that "there are many WIS guys" around. But that's actually ONLINE.

Here in this town where I live, I HAVE NOT COME across anyone (besides the watch stores owners) who is a WIS guys or interested in watches like us. Sad but it's reality.

However, that does not exstinguish my passion of watches!snoopy1.gif

It is rare for me as well that anyone ever comments on any of my watches. I get a few comments about the Submariner which I rarely ever wear. I guess I have had the most comments about my Ocean7 LM-3. People see that blue dial and want to take a 2nd look at it. I have had a lot of comments.

We have two jewelry stores I look around in here. One I respect very much and the entire staff is very knowledgeable on the brands they sell and watches in general. The sales manager there respects most every brand and has a true love for watches. I go in there at times and have to hunt him down after he asks to see some of my watches and then goes in the back and cleans them up for me. Sometimes I think he sizes them to fit him and he tries them on to see if he likes it. I often see him wearing brands they do not sell in the store.

Now, a few stores down is another jeweler that has a large selection of high end watches. I absolutely hate the place as they are some of the most snooty, yuppified bunch I have ever seen. They know nothing about watches and will often pull out a sales flier and read directly off of it when you ask them a specific question about a watch. I definitely never meet their stereotypical profile when I walk in and rarely get waited on immediately.

With one kid in college and the other one in HIgh School, I have to live vicariously through the watch purchases of others for now.  :)

I was in a business meeting a couple months back and noticed that the rep from the company we were meeting with was wearing a Tissot T-Touch.  Got distracted and didn't get to check it out.  Can't imagine seeing someone with a Panerai, but it would make my day.  For right now, I'm a WIS, once removed.

I walked into a pharmacy yesterday to get some meds for my little gal. One employee (A) which I know, came to me and said: "Hi, that's a nice watch you are wearing there!"

Another employee (B) who was already serving me, asked:"What brand is the watch?" Obviously I did not reply.

The employee (A) replied after looking at my watch:"Not sure, it says something "
MARINA" here!".

I paid my meds and left. I was wearing my LUMINOR
MARINA PANERAI 111! mistake.gif
Perhaps if I was wearing my ROLEX, they know ROLEX! toon1.gif

Am I missing something here?????????????????

Someone pays you a compliment on your watch, and because they are not a WIS...........you dont reply..................

Someone asks what kind of watch it is................and because they are not a WIS you dont reply??????????????

Can you explain the thought process?????????????

I was in a store looking for a mechanical watch for my wife.  I asked to see the Omega catalogue when the saleslady told me that Omega didn't make ladies mechanical watches.  Inside I was laughing very hard and thought to myself that this sales person was in the wrong business.  I've had a couple of comments on some of my watches. Typically my vintage Citizen with the 6000 mov't gets the most attention because of the dial.  Usually though no one says a thing.  I make a point of noticing others' watches to encourage them to take an interest in what they wear.  I was golfing last week and noticed someone wearing a Glycine. I walked up and asked to see it and told him what a nice watch it was. He didn't know anything about it only that it was a gift he received at a wedding.  Hopefully my enthusiasm will cause him to at least read up on the watch he wears.

LOL!!! Tony, it is like driving a BMW M6, people will comment different:

1. Wow! Nice car! (I would say Thank you!)

2. Wow! Nice Beemer you have there! (I would reply: Thank you, the BMW M6 is a nice car!)

3. Wow! You are driving a BMW M6? ( I would reply: Yes, that's the one! 507bhp under the bonnet with the V10 engine, 0-62mph in 4.6s.....etc).

4. Errr....what brand is "M6"? ( I would say BMW or NOTHING cos he might not even know the brand!subtlelaugh.gif)

Or course it is just an illustration here, BMW, in the world, is well known compared to PANERAI.

But like I said IMHO, I buy watches to impress myself (shameless plug!) and I know what my watch quality, make and accuracy are. That what's really counts! toon1.gif

Well Allen, having a PANERAI is not everything.

It is just a timepiece, not a cheap one but that's all, nothing else. I still have 1 Casio, 2 Swatch, a couple of INVICTAS, and bought a few quartzs recently. Though the total price of those is only a fraction of that PANERAI, they all do the same function of that PANERAI which is TELLING TIME. Some of them even have dates & day displays, stop watches, world time, illum, alarm functions......etc, in which these functions are missing in the PANERAI.

You know which is the BEST in my collection? Not the PANERAI, not Rolex....it is my little Princess ELENA!

Allen, the fact that you are watching your kid in High School and the other in Collegue NOW, that I think THOSE ARE BEST WATCHES of your life!:)

JMHO.
