So today I present to you a newly inherited Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Submariner. The family doesn't think this is a real Rolex. So I happily offered to buy it and it was given to me for a wedding gift. Here are a few things that have me confused. The lume still works pretty well. For being such an old watch I don't see why a fake would have used real tritium paint (T<25 on the dial). The crown is not signed, it looks like the Rolex logo may have popped out at some time, this to me screams fake, but I really have no clue about old Rolex's designs, real or fake. When you pull out the crown there is still a rubber seal in there, which builds my confidence in the crown a bit. The dial reads as follows: ROLEX oyster perpetual date SUBMARINER 1000ft=300m superlative chronometer officially certified Then down at the bottom of the dial it says: swiss -- T<25 And yes the bezel insert is missing. What do you guys think??? Here are the pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I think that if it's real, then it has aftermarket parts on it. The hands don't look right to me and you already know the crown isn't right. The only sure way to tell is to have it opened and check the movement to see if it's correct. You could also send it to Rolex for service and see if they send it back. If they go ahead and service it then it will be pricey as they will charge you for any parts replaced on top of the basic service fee. Last time I checked the basic service (clean, oil, adjust) was around $550. I will say that if it is real, then good score.

Not sure about that crown. But, both of my 1970's Rolex GMT II bracelets did not have solid end links. The center links were also hollow on the two tone version I owned. The lume on my oldest 1970-2 GMT stainless was dead when I sold it. Tritnium supposedly has a half life of about 12 years. See picture of my Two-Tone GMT with standard folded end links: Attachment: rolexgmtback1.jpg (Downloaded 74 times)

I also have the folded end links and hollow center links on my stainless sub bracelet. It's a 96 bracelet and I believe the solid end links are a recent upgrade to the oyster style bracelet.

Gifford It might just be your pics, but the colour of the writing on the dial is wrong - even for vintage models. The markers don't look right, and the colour is off for vintage. The dimples on the bezel don't have the right profile. That crown screams fake. The hands are not right. As Oscar suggested, check the numbers and then pop the hood. If you can't do that, ask a watchmaker to put it on a timing macine. (if it runs.) I bet the movement is ticking at less than the required 28800 bph. I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed with this one. Somehow I hope I'm wrong.... Do keep us posted.

Here's my grab: the date font style is off a little, the point of the Mercedes hour hand is not quite right and the alignment of the crown of the logo to the 12 marker point is not it. The lume of the markers, as spotted by Graham, is also off. Just my opinion....
