My tv is starting to act up so I need to start saving for a new one. Want an HD in the 40 some inch range. The one I have now is a 36" old style so I want in the 40's to get the same height. I want something that will last a good while (this one is 13 years old) and has a good pic. Want the full 1080p. Have been thinking of DLP? Ay brands to stay away from? Pro's/cons for LCD vs Plasma? What have been your experiences??

Scott, these are some notes I had from when I purchased a couple TV's last year.....a guy that used to work for me was like a walking encyclopedia when it came to video, audio, all that stuff....he helped me a lot. The black levels on plasma are much better than on LCD, this makes for a much better picture overall...however for this reason if you have the TV in a brightly lit room the plasma will tend to look washed out because of the high black levels.....the LCD will be a much better picture in that environment. Viewing from angles is much better on the plasma, if you are at any angle from the TV with the LCD it will start to wash out, similar to rear projection big screen TVs. One last thing that I had to consider was elevation, because plasma works off of some kind of gas if you are over around 5,000 feet above sea level you will lose some picture quality. That said, when I was buying new HD TVs for my two houses I actually bought a Plasma for my house in Ohio and an LCD for my house in NC....the room in Ohio is much bigger and you are viewing from angles...it is also a much darker room so the Plasma was the better choice. I bought the LCD for the house in NC because the room has a huge picture window and is much brighter, the room is also smaller and finally it is at about 4600 ft elevation, so the LCD was the better choice. FYI, bought Panasonic in both cases, a little more expensive but from everything I was told and read they are the best. Hopefully i didn't confuse you more, but there really isn't a right or wrong answer to your question.

Thanks Nick. The more info I have the better. For the plasma, does the room have to be completely dark or just no direct sunlight ?

I like LCD best. Less worries with lighting for one. There are allot of good options. With LCD also look for one with Auto Motion Plus 120Hz. ;)

Reality, There are no Fixes for Plasma, when they crap on you, they are usually done. With LCD they can be fixed. We own 7 LCD TVs in this house and they range from Sony Bravia, Phillips, Pioneer, Westinghouse. We had an issue with the Sony Bravia, motherboard went out, Fixed. The Plasmas Run alot Hotter, thus wearing out faster and bad for the enviroment and Energy. The LCDs run cooler and last alot longer and less energy to run. Hope some of that helps. Most of my clients have had huge success with the Brand Vizio at Costco http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.aspx?whse=BC&Ne=5000001&eCat=BC|79|2341&N=4001382+4294919901&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&topnav=

The reason I chose plasma over LCD is that both units can have pixels go out and the warrenty has stipulations such as..how many are out? and where are they located on the screen? left? right? center? etc. The difference is when a pixel goes out on a LCD it's like green or red laser beam, very distracting and IMO a single pixel out will destroy the whole viewing experience. When a pixel goes out on a plasma, it's black and can hardly be seen.

Wow, thanks for all the great info guys. As for the Vizio, the response time is 5ms.. Is this close to the 120hz? Costco has the 42" size that I want at a great price. Also, still wondering if anyone has any experience with DLP. I read they have a really good pic, no angle problems, and use mirrors instead if pixels. Any downfalls with this??
