What are gray market watches...Gray Market watches are watches on the market sold by other than an AD (authorized dealer). They are the result of 3 different things: 1) An AD trying to get rid of excess stock forced on him by the manufacturer. 2) Stock resulting from a bankruptcy sale. 3) Excess stock disposed of by the manufacturer through other channels of distribution than their AD's. Except for the miniscule # of Gray Market watches on the market due to item #2, above, the Gray Market is, in fact, created by the manufacturer, who then whines about what he has created. As a note, not all Gray Market watches come without factory warranty...some large outlets who are not AD's do have contracts with the manufacturer for "factory Warranty" service.

I couldn't agree more that the manufacturers do this to themselves. I sometimes wonder if they purposely do this so that they do not have to back their products up and therefore reduce the overhead. Costco is a big gray market dealer. I have seen several Patek and other high end pieces on their web site. Right now I have had my eye (much to the wife's horror) on a Chopard Flyback Chrono at my local Costco for $3,099.00. I asked them about the warranty as I knew that they could not be a certified AD and was told that they have their own jewelry site that has a watchmaker on site to warrant the watches. Just a standard attempt of a manufacturer trying to control the marketplace.

Quite true, and other's, like TJ MAXX, negotiate seperate contracts with the manufacturers for factory service!

So the question is will you buy a gray market watch or not? I will if: 1. The watch is 100% authentic. 2. The discount is considerably great like 30% onwards. 3. It covers warranty at least 6 months, whether to be repaired in their own jewelers or AD does not matter to me as long as they use original parts if the watch is repaired under warranty. Ultimately if we are referring to a high end watch, it will not break down so easily. And even if you buy from AD, most of them(not all though) come with only a period of 12-24 months of warranty. And most of the time, the watches do not break down during the period of warranty. Right? JMO.:P

Like Jacky I have no probelm buying them either. I have at least a half dozen gray market watches. Just do your home work on the watch and seller first before taking the plunge. ;)
