I want to get a simple pilot watch.   Aristo and Archimede (both Ickler brands) make the basic design that I am looking for.  However, the Archimede goes for about $100 US more than the nearly identical watch by Aristo (on gomon.com, anyway).  Does anyone familiar with these brands know if there are any qualitative differences between the watches?  I do know that they have the same movements and general physical specs.  If they are indeed the same, I'd of course go with the cheaper one.

thanks.

hey,
if im not mistaken, Aristo make their own cases, Ickler does achimede n Limes. i find that the finish on the achimede is a tad better. Both r good watches for the money. Also check out the pilots from steinhart. At least on par with the above mentioned watches. cool10.gifcool10.gif

I love both those brands, in pilots

I have 3 Aristos

Id say go for the Archimede, better re-sale value, if you ever had to sell it.

Pilots watches are fun.

Post your pics, when you get one

I've been on a similar search lately.  Also have a look at Laco:

I'd say if you just want the style go for the lower cost one but if you are looking at a style and design just go for the one you like best. Both of these feel about the same on the wrist though the Aristo is lighter being made of Titanium. I like and enjoy both and have had nice comments on both. Either choice would likely be a happy one for you.

Unfortunately, it looks as if my choice may be made for me.  I was preferring the Archimede model, but upon attempting to order one, I got an E-mail back from Archimede stating that they had closed their US website because they were no longer accepting payment in US Dollars.  I don't have an international account, and after the duties and exchange fees it just wouldn't make any sense for me to buy one in Euros.  That's really too bad, because as far as I know, there are not currently any US dealers selling Archimede.

About the Aristo:  the model that looks the most like the Archimede that I wanted was found on Gnomon.com (3H34) -- it's stainless steel, not titanium; I wanted the stainless steel.  However, I have some reservations: how reputable is Gnomon?  I Googled this model and, unlike virtually every other model of Aristo that I considered, I was unable to find a record of it anywhere except on the Gnomon site.  That seems odd, especially for such a basic watch.  Also, the XL flieger crown appears to be a bit unwieldy and much larger than that which I have seen on other models.  I like the diamond-shaped crown on the Archimede, but this may be a bit much.  I haven't worn a watch in a number of years and thus am a bit green in these matters, but wouldn't such a large crown be uncomfortable?  Or not? Would this deter any of you from owning it?

Just to redirect you a bit. Have no worries about using Gnomon to order one of these. Gnomon is run by Anders and he is a good friend to this forum and provides top quality products at reasonable prices with the highest of customer service. and I say that from personal experience. I am certain there are many others here who can verify what I am stating.

I believe Gnomon carries both brands and I think Anders is still accepting USD. Give it a shot.

As for the onion crown. Seems large to me but not too large.

The Gnomon site states that they won't ship an Archimede watch to the US (or Canada, for that matter).  But thanks for alleviating my worries about the store. Why do you think it is that they are offering an Aristo model that doesn't appear to be available anywhere else, even the company website?  Is it merely old and not in production any more?

I gave Steinhart another look and I do like their B-Uhr, but it comes in at a gargantuan 47 mm.  I don't think I want something that huge.  I have 7.5 inch wrists, but still...

Gnomon, you cant go wrong with buying from Anders

Look to the left of your web page, You see all those watch companies there?
They wouldnt be there if they couldnt be trusted.

If your dying for an Archimede, give Gnomon a shout

I'm surprised they won't take credit card and charge you the cost in Euros.  It would be simialr to a transaction at a shop in Germany.  I think depending on the credit card company you wind up paying an extra 2-3 percent for currency conversion.

That is how I do it and the conversion fee is small if any at all depending on the type of account you have.

I got a email from archimede. I was on the list for the limited edition. I have until the 30th to decide If I want it. I'm not sure if its worth the 740.00 though.
