I am new to watches, and I was wondering if Russian watches are any good.  Specifically, I have been to websites selling Aviator/Duran/Sturmanskie models (I think they're all made by the same company?) and -- on a computer screen, anyway -- they often look pretty good and are cheaper than their Swiss or German counterparts.  Are they as good the German models that cost 50%-100% more but look similar? (internally, as well as externally)  Is there any greater risk of getting a fraud when ordering a Russian watch (as Russia and Eastern Europe are the source of plenty of knockoffs).  Are there particular movements that should be avoided? Any distributors that are recommended?  I did happen to notice that longislandwatch.com and rugift.com are noticeably less expensive than most other sites.

Thank you for any advice.  I have my eye on a Poljot Buran Mechanical 26660/2751364, which vaguely resembles a Jorg Schauer model that is 10X more expensive.

Interesting timing.  I know nothing about russian watches, but I just came across this web site this morning.

http://www.netgrafik.ch/russiantimes.htm

I haven't really gone through it but maybe there is some info there for you?

The Russian watches have been getting better over the last few years. Buran now even moved and  is in Switzerland. Now some of the older stuff is questionable.

Prior to the opening of the Soviet Union Russian watches were built for the masses meaning they were built cheaply. Of course there are exceptions.  As Russia has looked to expand its exports of watches you see the quality coming up in terms of QC and acceptable tolerances. It has been my experience that the Russians are not as accurate or buttery smooth as Swiss driven watches, but they are excellent in their own right.

The design cues in Russian watches are easily identifiable and quite appealing in my opinion. The relative inexpensive nature of many of the watches makes them a great tangent to follow. Russian watches are particularly appealing for the mechanical chronographs and manual wind watches to me. You will find a number a Russian watch aficionados at 3T, and they have far more knowledge than I can offer.

I don't think I would worry about knock-offs too much. Marc from IW is moving away from Russians a bit so he may not have the options you look for. I can also tell you I just purchased a Russian watch from russia2all and was very pleased with the service. R2A is a member of a well known distribution group which works with TT and has several on-line retailers as listed here:

IMO, I think that this Buran  Chronograph was pretty cool looking.

Hi

I have a few Russians and I like them alot.

Not any prroblems YET ( keep my fingers crossed)

The Aviator is one of my regular go to watches. Nice

hand crank. The Buran is exceptional and runs very smoothly.

It is also a hand crank and a great value for the price.

Mech. regulator chronograph.

The Vostok Europe is also a very reliable watch. I just cant

figure out how to set the date.

IMHO pretty good value for the dollar spent.

I did some research earlier and found that the Poljot 3133 movement is based
on the Valjoux 7736 manual wind.  Perhaps, Buran were outsourced to Switzerland
for accuracy?

Those are nice watches Bill.

Billy you can do a fakey quick set on these movements. Advance the hour hand past 12:00 midnght and wait for the date to flip. Then reverse the hour hand to 8:00 and stop. Then advance the hour hand again and the date will flip again. Lather...  goofyrepeat as needed. ThumbsUp02.gif

Ive been trying to set the date for well over a year.

I own 8 or 9 russians and love them all.  For the money the money you cant beat them.  Also you can tell the styling of a russian from afar.  Another good place to buy is jtvwatches.com  One of my older russinas made during the USSR has a beautiful Molnija movemant that I wouldnt trade for anything. As long as you buy from a reputable distibutor you will be fine. ThumbsUp02.gif Scott
