My brother bought an automatic Tag about a month ago and he's telling me it's gaining 17 seconds/day. Anyone have any suggestions on why this would be? Is it possible it's overwound or something? The Caliber 5 movement should use an ETA2824 as a base. That said, the movement is most likely an unregulate version. I don't see gaining 17 seconds per day as a very big problem, or even a problem. He should be able to take it to a qualified watchmaker and have it regulated fairly cheaply, and once done it should run very well.

thanks for the info. Yeah, he's cool with the 17 seconds and he can get it looked at and fized, if possible, under warantee, but he doesn't seem overy concerned about it. I just thought there may be some trick or something you guys may know. Thanks, again.

Give it some time to break in as it were... but personally 17 seconds would be unacceptable on a Tag for me. If it doesn't settle down after some winding and unwinding I would have it regulated.

If it's a COSC certified watch, then yeah, 17 sec/day would surely be a problem. The fact it's not, and it's just using a glorified 2824, doesn't sound like a real problem. Especially this early on it the life of the watch. Usually, it takes awhile for the watch to really settle into how it's used by the owner. Sometimes after months of use, the amount of time it gains per day comes down to 1/2 of what it starts out at. So he might see it come down to only being around 8 sec/day fast. Regardless, he needs to wear it as he normally will to see just how fast the watch runs. Maybe even keep notes before he goes to get it regulated. Then, he can provide that information to the watchmaker for when it is regulated, so that when it's on his wrist, it can be adjusted to keep nearly perfect time. And there's nothing special to winding/using a 2824. You can't overwind it, as once the mainspring is fully wound, it will slip so that it isn't wound any further. So...no worries hand6.gif.
