from the bottom of the ocean with the Titanic watches to the Moon!...what do you think hand6.gif

Moon Dust-DNA
Authentic Moon dust as well as fragments of the Apollo XI, Soyuz and ISS spacecraft integrated into exceptional timepieces
The Watch Quote™ - November 14th, 2008

As part of its DNA of Famous Legends concept, featuring timepieces inspired by and created in tribute to the great legends of our times, the Maison Romain Jerome presents its second exclusive collection, entitled Moon Dust-DNA.

Legitimately proud of its Titanic-DNA collection dedicated to the world’s greatest maritime legend, Romain Jerome launches out into space in homage to the most fascinating human adventure of all: the conquest of space.

Moon Dust-DNA embodies this incredible odyssey and features its main protagonists. It honours the symbol of this headlong race, distinguished by confrontation as well as occasional collaboration between the American and Soviet superpowers, whose main aim was to reach the Moon.

The design of the Moon Dust-DNA collection is inspired by and incorporate the DNA heritage of the great players and major figures in the conquest of space. The materials composing the models in this collection incorporate authentic fragments from the aerospace universe such as moon dust as well as fragments of the Apollo XI and Soyuz space shuttles and the International Space Station (ISS).

Moon Dust-DNA features:
  • A lunar dial based on a mineral deposit including Moon dust;

  • A 46 mm steel and titanium case incorporating steel from the Apollo XI space shuttle;

  • Rusted steel paws including fragments of the Soyuz spacecraft; and

  • A strap composed of fibres from a spacesuit worn during the ISS mission*.

*Romain Jerome guarantees that the origin of each of these materials is duly certified by a legal document authenticated in Switzerland. Each piece in the Moon Dust-DNA collection will also be accompanied by a certificate from the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) saluting the approach of Romain Jerome and the tribute it is thereby rendering to the conquest of space.

Well.........I do not like it on first take.  This reminds me of some the watches for sale on Sky Mall.

I do not see the wow factor on some space junk incorporated into a watch....

Yes you too can be a part of the space mission!

Now having the vintage watch that the astronauts wore, or maybe the Huer McQueen wore in LeMans...maybe that means something.

This reminds me of the meteorite watches Tim Sold about 6 years ago....the whole premise of proximity to wrist means that you are some how tied to the actual event......ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm of a similar mind.  While the watch itself looks pretty darn cool (imho) I don't get the appeal of space dust or Titanic rust.  I certainly don't think it should be the major selling point either.  I think there's lots cooler things about mechanical watches than saying there's a finite layer of moon dust on it.

Maybe if you were an astronaut and brought something back from space and you had it made into a watch then I can see the personal appeal but I just don't get this stuff they're selling.

That's just me though...

I think it is awesome!  As a kid I remember watching as the lunar module "Eagle" touched down on the moon (yes, I believe it really did happen!) and when Neil Armstrong became the first person to step on the moon.  Even as a 9 year old it made a lasting impression on myself and most of the world.  Of course "the phrase "one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind" spoken by Armstrong is to this day inspiring.  Even though I never made it to the moon I still feel extremely proud as an American that we did.  That the watch is made up of pieces of many different nations space equipment and the moon makes the statement that space is for everyone on the planet to explore, and I like that statement.

If I had the means to procure one of these fine timepieces I would do so and I would wear it proudly.  hand6.gifhand6.gif

We all know these are ridiculous collector's pieces, but we shouldn't lose track of the fact they are superb watches. A colleague of mine has a Titanic DNSA model and wears it regularly at work. He spends his day performing colonoscopies!!face4.gif I will tell you these are fantastically crafted pieces with manufacture movements to die for. Now personally, the Titanic DNA and Moon DNA don't do a thing for me, but may be if I was a well-off collector...;)

I like the style of the watch and I do think the idea is neat,  not to sure about the dial, I think it would take getting used to.  The one thing I am curious about is the % of moon dust needed in order to call it authentic.  It makes me wonder if moon dust is now available at the local wal mart or did the company get a hold of a piece of,  what is it about 1k pounds of moon rock that was brought back ground it down into a brew and painted the dials, interesting...  By the way where does the DNA fit in to all of this??
