I am getting more and more interested in Chinese watches. It all started with the MM Pam homage w/"6498" swan neck. Unbelievable watch for the money I paid. Excellent customer service. One the watches that gets more compliments from all I have. The watch is running 14-16 seconds fast per day. If I compare it with my Unitas 6498-2 watch, that runs 4 s fast - considering that it is a swiss adjusted movement built to be COSC certifiable, I think the Chinese movement is darn good. I am pretty sure it was not adjusted, and that probably oiling was not top notch... I have now a "6498" Parnis on its way, and I have been stopping myself from ordering a B&R GMT homage with automatic movement. Also, I found Perpetual watches. They sell interesting watches with complications, also at a ridiculous price. On top, they have a 2 year guarantee, covering even the shipping costs to them if the watch has an issue in that timeframe! I am waiting for the Regulator to be back on stock, but have to stop myself from ordering another of their models... Anyone else bitten by the same bug? Can't say I have been bitten by the Chinese Bug. I'm sure there are some nice watches coming out of China. They just don't interest me. :)

Unless it says rolex on it 90% of the weight of your watch is probably chinese! I think that bite has given me a rash before too.... ![]() There is some really good quality stuff coming out of china now they seem to be "improving" exponentially to take up the slack from the swatch group shutdown... Now if the global economy would just show some signs of having a pulse...

Yup, you are right. I have an early Stuhrling with a Chinese automatic movement. But, I don't go searching for a watch BECAUSE it was made in China.

I think in 10 to 15 years, Chinese movements can rival some of the Swiss and Japanese brands. Their metallurgy is ok and maybe craftmanship is decent. Meanwhile, I'll just stay on the fence;)

Staying on the fence; Listening to my Movado quietly ticking away. I can faintly hear the sound from the pallet fork as it hits the escapement, That is the shear essence of the engineering marvel of a mechanical watch.

On the fence. What I don't know about my Swiss watch can't hurt me...;) Definitely not seeking out Chinese pieces.

Actually, I do not think I am searching for a watch BECAUSE it is made in China. I am rather attracted by the fact of getting a good looking mechanical watch, that ticks with a similar sound than a Swiss Made, is more than decent timekeeper, its total cost delivered is about the same I pay just for shipping on a watch from other latitudes, and has more than good customer service. I like Swiss watches, I think I am going to like a lot my German made Vortex, I like microbrands with Miyotas inside and, at this stage I like Chinese watches as well. And, I believe, in my collection the best value for money is out of Chinese at this stage. Please note as well that I am not saying or implying that value for money is the most important thing in watches or in general. Last edited on Wed Oct 21st, 2009 11:11 am by ral |

I think like everything else the chinese will rival everyone in some regards. We all want value these days and that means adding quality with competitve prices. Some of those chinese watches are coming out very nicely with some workhorse movements in them and they're able to do it for less money than the swiss, german, and russians and japanese. We already know that some of the watches we get are great value because they're running with a Miyota mov't (or similar) in it which keeps the price down. I can't help but wonder if the Chinese are the ones to make the next horological breakthrough....not in new mov't technology or materials but rather the ability to mass produce quality mov'ts and extremely affordable prices. Doing that could disrupt the whole Quartz movement. (For the record Ral, I too am getting a Perpetual Regulator when they're back in.)

I agree that the Chinese offerings are getting better all the time. Sure like many collectors I have a few relatively high end Swiss pieces, but the Asian affordability makes them fun and allows the acquisition of numerous pieces for the price of just one of the big guys. Personally I like tricking them out with interchangeable straps. Sometimes the strap cost as much as the watch, but so what. cool10.gif
