I've had a Citizen eco-drive for about 5 years and, suddenly, yesterday it just froze. I thought maybe it lost its charge so I've left it in the light all day yesterday and have it under my office lamp as I type, but no sign of life.

When I pull out the crown, I can move the 'mode' hand, but other than that I'm getting no response.

Does any one have any ideas on bringing this guy back to life? Can the 'battery' be replaced on these?

Thanks.

I think these have a capacitor that can be replaced; but I have no idea at what cost.

My wife lets her eco-drive sit in her jewelry box for extended periods; so it runs down all the time. I usually pull the crown to stop the movement and leave it in sunlight for the day. So far that has always worked. Give it a try.

The power cell can be replaced by an authorized citizen repair place.  It's not a basic battery that a normal repair shop can replace IIRC.

The capacitor can be replaced at a cost of around $30 by a watch repair person.

From what I know, capacitors of EcoDrives have a life of about 10 years. If your capacitor is the culprit and is now "incapacitated", maybe there is something else inside the movement that has caused it to stop. Replacing the capacitor itself may only be be fixing the symptom but not the cause.

I'd suggest that you take it to a Citizen authorized repair facility, find out the cause of the probable half-life and then make a decision or a true fix from there.

Hope this helps;)

Certain Eco-Drives (Like my Calibre 2100) have a reset feature. On my watch, it's a recessed pusher on the side of the case opposite the crown and pushers. Check your instruction manual to see if your watch has something like that. It might save you some money and aggravation.

Good luck.

I think it depends on the model/movement - I've changed the capacitor in a lot of my Citizen 'Eco-beaters' as I've come to call them...

I've had to leave one of my eco-drive divers in the sun for the better part of two days of full sun before I could get the thing to start ticking....

It's really nothing more than changing the battery - it's just a different type of battery.

Also - Citizen carries a nice 5 year warranty in the US - check your serial number - you may be in luck! Citizen USA has great customer service...

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I'll be changing the battery when I have a chance. Although it may be less that 5 years old, still, so that's some great advice, Bigolac  - thanks.

Had the same problem with my Eco-Drive diver.  I had to leave it under a lamp for about 4 days before it started ticking again.  Make sure the light is fairly close to the face of the watch.  If it's too far away, there isn't enough light to get the watch ticking again.

This is copied from Citizen's website:

"All Eco-Drive models require an ‘all reset’ after charging from a complete loss of power or a low power state. This is much like rebooting a computer after a power interruption enabling the movement to recognize the fully charged energy cell. This is one of the most frequently overlooked steps, especially on “simple” analog models, and if not performed, may result in irregular operation of the watch although it is fully charged.

‘All-reset’ for ‘simple’ analog models - those with no special features other than the time and date feature (not perpetual calendar):

After fully charging the watch, gently pull the crown out to the time setting position. After thirty seconds, return the crown to the closed position next to the case After the ‘all-reset’ is complete, be sure to set the time and date (if applicable.) If your watch features a screw-down crown, be sure to securely tighten the crown against the case.

‘All reset’ for multi-feature and perpetual calendar models:

Procedures for these types of watches vary by model. Be sure to refer to the instruction manual and/or our web site at http://www.citizenwatch.com for complete information."

You might want to give it a try before doing something expensive... or rash... or both.... Good luck!
