I have always been fascinated by Tudor. With the Rolex DNA in it's "veins", I think it's a watch worth adding to any collection. Lately, I was sniffing out the Tudor Iconaut in white dial and polished steel at 43mm. Even at 43mm, it looked bigger than its dimensons because of Tudor's play on the bezel. It's a chrono with GMT, not a very common approach. However, something came up a few days ago. The Tudor Hydro 1200 was released in Europe in the 2nd quarter of 2009 but only got to Asia this month. I happened to drop by one AD and was attracted to this big, brute of a watch. I spent an hour just sizing it up and comparing it side by side with the Iconaut. All told, I just fell in love with the Hydro 1200. For sure it's on my radar to be shot down in early 2010. Here are my impressions as shown on the pictures:  Here's another  Check out how thick it is versus the Enzo  And another  Give me your thoughts. What do you know of Tudor? It's not common to see on many wrists and, in fact, in all my life I have only seen 1 guy with a Tudor. I don't know if there's anything wrong with it. Price points don't convey value? Boring designs? Distribution challenges? I don't seem to have the answers. All I know is this Hydro 1200 seems to be a very well-made watch created and made under the shadow of its more illustrious big corporate and horological brother/sponsor. Thanks for looking:dude:

I'm still lusting after a Tudor sub and their version of the Daytona. They're a Quality piece equal to what you find in Rolex, they just don't use an in-house movement. It's usually a Rolex modified ETA of some sorts, although I believe they may be using Sellita movements in some of their watches now.

It looks good Jeff! The GMT hand is maybe too much with all those big hands... Tudor is a good Rolex case with an ETA inside. That's what stoped me many times: The ETA. ETA is great and beats in most of my watches BUT the price of the Tudor is still not fitted with an ETA in my eyes... I said and say again: From a certain price, I want an inhouse. Even if I need should put some 100's more...;)

Great review, Jeff!hand6.gif I honestly don't know what to make of Tudor. I have been on the fence about this brand for a long time, but lately the fresh, bold designs have caught my attentin - like this one. I must agree with John: the hands don't cut it for me.

Thanks, team. Yes, the price point with an ETA is way too high really and for sure much of the gap is accounted for by brand pull. The hands also seem to take the watch overboard but I think it's this exact reason why I just like the retro style hands. You are so right, William. Graham, true. Like you I've been indecisive on the brand because maybe it charges too high a premium for the ETA movement and the Rolex bloodline. But this design is simply so striking and hard to find that I just get attracted to it a lot. Decisions Decisions Decisions  Thanks guys.

Jeff! I understand your divided mind: The case,bezel are really great: No doubt that there is a charm and quality there... But the movement is nothing really special. You know what is a really special movement: You own some damn good ones in your collection;) Tudor is high in price because it's just a more affordable Rolex: It's been created for that I suppose... To target people who was too short for a Rolex but wanted the same look and case quality. One day, 15 years ago, a jeweler showed me his Rolex and told "I was twice in the sahara desert with it and still after 25 years it hold under a minute late by month..." He was proud. But that was the movement he did admire the most... The case follows generally in quality...;)

Hey Jeff...well I'm definitely a little late with comments...I seem to regularly miss the great posts that end up under the "Watch News and Reviews" section here at 3T. I, like others have commented, have never really known what to make of Tudor as a watch producer. At their price point, it seems that I could always consider a maker that has their own in-house caliber under the hood (not that I own anything in that price range...but hey, maybe 2010 will be the year!!). But, they do have some unique designs of their own these days as you pointed out with the Iconaut and this Hydro 1200 which has them moving well away from the conservative/classic designs of Rolex. I really love the case, bezel (really like the multipiece bezel design and how it is integrated in this design), and bracelet design of this Hydro 1200. I'm not so crazy about the hands as others have mentioned, and the font size (and all of that extra writing) on the dial is a bit distracting. Maybe if they have left off the "Rotor-Self-Winding" bit...hmmm I definitely like it overall though...
