Hi all, I have been reading a lot about watches over the last several months and am thinking about starting to get into collecting. I've always thought about owning a really nice and fairly expensive swiss watch, which I will still probably do at some point in the future. Right now, I just have several quartz watches (Junghans RC, Phillpe Charriol, Citizen), but I just ordered my first automatic watch, an orient, from Long Island Watch. Can't wait for it to arrive! I wanted to see what an automatic is like before I (probably) take the plunge sometime to get a more expensive watch. After looking at more of the really nice watches on the Island Watch site, and their incredibly low prices, I've develped even more newbie questions than I had a month or so ago. I hope you can tolerate these. ;) Here we go: 1) Given that a lot of moderately priced watches use ETA movements just like some of the more expensive watches, what really separates automatic watches in terms of cost? Is the difference between a $500 watch with an ETA movement really that far off from a $2000 Sinn or Ball Watch (as examples)? Is a $2000 Sinn that much different from a $5000 Rolex? I've been trying to think of it in terms of cars. A Rolex can be 10 times the cost of a "nice" $500 watch yet a nice mercedes may be only 3 or 4 times the cost of a Toyota Camry -- not 10 times the cost! Why such a huge difference? I don't even want to think about all of the watches > $8000 or so, because those would just be a pipe dream to me. 2) In general, watches depreciate. Correct? If I get into this hobby, I assume I should expect watches to decline in value unless they are really expensive or rare, right? Even if I buy a new Omega, for example, I should expect it to go down in value over time or is this an over-simplification? I have more newbie questions, but I guess I'll stop here for now. thanks! Rick

Hay Rick welcome to 3T it's a great community for the watch lover at all levels. I'm no pro but have been in the game for awhile. So will give ya a basic reply to these questions and will let the big hitters go into details if needed. The Orients are very good watches too. ;) 1) The big thing that affects price is advertising. If a watch company like Rolex dumps millions into a add campaign they will bump the price to get as much of that back if not more over time. It's about making money. Smaller brands who go more on word of mouth like Enzo or Orsa can afford to set a lower price due to the lack of the add push. 2) It all depends on the type of watch really the brand name the demand for it and rarity can change things too. Some watches will devalue some stay the same and some gain value. There is a very big and wide swing in all this. And it can depend on the owner/collector too. It's a very fun hobby or addiction as some guys wives seem to think. Thanks God I'm single I would go nuts having to ask to buy a watch every time. LOL :D

Good points made by all here. I would just throw in as a comment on both of your questions. The expensive watch, say Rolex, will not depreciate as quickly as the more moderatley priced watch and in some cases depending on supply and demand (Limited editions, etc) may appreciate. In many ways your analogy to automobiles is spot on. Especially considering depreciation. Buy what you like and want to wear and damn the torpedoes!! Which Orient is onthe way from Marc at IW??

#1) I'm with Skip. Its mostly advertising. The clasp on my Orient is 100x better than the clasp on the Rolex (off course all other aspects aren't equal); but when Rolex spends 40 million a year on advertising, the money comes from somewhere (consumer!). On a list of the top 10 advertisers, Rolex, as #1, spends more than 2 through 9 combined (I read this somewhere a year or so ago). #2) Most depreciate, especially if you wear it. Some will hold value, but what's the fun in buying if you're not wearing :) Marc ps - I know the Orient, and I'm not telling :) Last edited on Sat Feb 16th, 2008 07:39 pm by IW |

Wow! I got my first mechanical (automatic) watch today. I cannot believe how nice this watch is for less than $300. I am really blown away by this Orient. I expected a much "cheaper" watch.
