My house was broken into a few months ago and my Rolex Oyster Date Perpetual with a domed bezel and Oyster Bracelet was stolen. (Keep in mind that this is a brand new watch). Unfortunately, the watch was a cash sale otherwise Visa would have been able to do an insurance replace for me. The police caught the guy on Wednesday night, who broke into my house with a decade long criminal record of B&E, drug dealing and illegal possession of an firearm, who had escaped from prison. I stopped by my office to check on messages, as I am leaving for vacation. A fax came in from my insurance agent telling me that a local Dealer had received a Rolex with a damage sapphire crystal. So,the sales lady checked for any insurance claims that were processed in a three month period that were unresolved. My insurance claim and police file were on the list along the information and contact number of my insurance agent. The sales lady had faxed my insurance agent on Friday afternoon to confirm that my insurance claim is to be closed. I got a phone call from the Rolex Dealer this morning at 11 AM,telling me to come by to examine my watch that they've received. I've brought the original receipt along that contained my serial number and other particulars in relation to my watch. The owner of the store gave me a repair quote: Repair and restore the watch which will cost 1,800 - $2,400 because the movement and crystal were damaged to the point where the warranty will not cover. From the amount of damage this perpetrator had done was he threw my watch on the ground and destroyed a perfectly working watch. "Since you have the original invoice and this being a brand new watch that was stolen from your property and was bought a competitor. What I am willing to do is this:" replied the owner. He opened the display case and said, "You can take a brand new Rolex today identical to the one you've bought in the spring." I told him that I didn't have the money for another one and that I only came in to confirm that the damaged watch was mine. He took me into his office, I know this sound bad and he closed the door behind me. "What I am going to do for you is this...I will write up an invoice for a new one and replace the damaged the one for free, since it was an insurance claim. I will then take the damaged one along with the sales receipt from the competitor and send it UPS to Geneva along and insurance claim,to see if they could rebuilt the watch at minimal charge." He replied. "Minimal charge? " I answered...feeling slightly confused. "Yes,just pay for the shipping which is $130 and I'll handle the rest." I shook his hand, gave him $130 and we went back out front to the Rolex display case. He showed me another Rolex Oyster Date Perpetual with a domed bezel and Oyster Bracelet, exactly like the one that was damaged. He held a blue dial, salmon dial and a silver dial. Since it was free, I took the blue dial with Arabic Indices. He went off to the back of the store with the watch. His daughter who was in her early thirties, had made her way to the watch display case to where I was standing. We chatted and I found out that it was her that she had spoken to the insurance agent. Her father came out, with the watch in the box, sales receipt and COSC Certificate. I gazed at the watch just before he closed it and I could sense that she was looking right at me. I looked up and she smiled. " Since, you've went out of your way for me the only I could do is invite the two over for lunch?" I suggested. So, I've wound up with a new watch and some new Italian Friends in one day... not bad. It was the daughter who bought dinner... To Be Continued.

Apparently, perpetrator tried to pose as me but little did he know that Rolex watches can be identified by their owner through the use of the serial number on the case. The data is kept in Geneva,Switzerland for service records. Since my watch has a police file and insurance claim number detailing that the watch is stolen. The Rolex Dealer can't do anything at that point until the rightful owner has been contacted. Through his incompetence he gave his identity away and was arrested by the police on Wednesday night. If the other Rolex can be restored,I think I'll give it to the owner of this store as a gift for the help that he has done for me, sort of as a reward for his kindness. In fact, that is what I will do on Monday.

When someone goes out of their way to make a difference for someone else, that is what's important. It's not about money, not about pride but rather good honest customer service. If the owner of the store didn't do what he did yesterday,he's reputation might as well be "It's not my watch,so why should I care?" attitude. I might as well picked up my watch and left. However, since there was another Rolex Dealer from across the street. He wanted to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Last edited on Sun Aug 10th, 2008 05:59 pm by Simon_Leung |

Withing the last year I had my Rolex sent to the Dallas, TX facility to be repaired. I had ruined it years ago by not having the crown screwed down fully and wearing it in a hot tub. Needless to say, everything was replaced except case and bracelet. Movement, crystal (I had chipped it way before the hot tub incident) dial, hands, seals and crown. Drained my wallet of close to a grand. Its a SS Oyster Perpetual Datejust They did a great job on it and even polished the case and bracelet. Looks better than it did new.

Well let's see what happens to the perpetrator. I was quite amazed that I've made some new friends by the end of the day. I guess it comes down to my personality of being calm, rational and reasonable; mixed in with a sense of humor.

What a great story Simon. When I was a cop in LA, I always loved those rare situations when we were able to catch the burglars with the goods, or better yet, in the act. I know how much pain such cowardly scum cause their victims. What a nice gesture to offer your repaired Rolex to the store owner... that's pure class buddy! hand6.gif

Thank you JD. I don't even know the owner, until Saturday. From what I knew now, he seems like a genuine person who cares more about his clients than profits. I mean after all, the owner did give me a $5,600 Rolex for free. Since I'm going to be wound up with two watches, I thought to myself might as try to get the other one repair and offer it as a token of appreciation.

Simon - if I were in your shoes, I would have done exactly the same thing. Well done, sir - that is the act of a true gentleman. Last year, we had a big news story about a family that found an envelope on their front lawn. Two 12 year old kids found it, and handed it in to Police after discussing it with their Mom. Rather than go to the dark side and spend the rest of their lives as little thieves, these two kids got 3 consecutive nights of pats on the back, TV stories, newspaper articles and merit-based rewards from their community - and all for doing the right thing. It seems perverse that people can make such a fuss over what would seem to be the right thing to do anyway... but then again - the envelope contained nearly $50,000 AUD and was claimed by the rightful (non-drug-dealer!) owner. It is yin and yang, Simon. The universe will pay you back tenfold. Cheers mate on such a nice gesture. Ian
