 Some pictures of my Columbus Watch Co. pocket watch. This one was made in 1894 at a factory in Columbus, Ohio started by Dietrich Gruen. An excellant history can be found here:  http://www.thewatchguy.com/pages/GRUEN.html

This is a 16 size in a nickeloid case with 15 j. and lever set:

 Scott, 16 Size refers to the size of the actual movement of the watch...if I remember right a 16 size movement is about 43mm. It had nothing to do with the overall size of the watch with the case, just the movement.

This was the most popular size for Railroad Grade pocket watches.

A 10 size is very, very close in size to a 6497 movement about 38mm, you will see these size Hamilton movements in some of the Pam Homage watches

 Those older pocket watches are very cool. Both of my grandfathers carries pocket watches. No idea what ever happened to them after they passed on.

Thanks,  what does each point, i.e 1,2,3 etc., represent in measurement?

Absolutely understand now, i always thought it was an arbitrary number, but it looks like there is an actual formula involved...

Looks like we both learned something today.  Thanks for the education.  Now I will know what someone is talking about when they give the size of a pocket watch.
