I'm sure the reason for the exhibition back was to help fight the quartz watch by showing people the craftsmanship of the mechanical watch movement, but who started it? Was it Swatch?

Great question. I'd love to know too. Google, Yahoo and MSN are of no help. Just pull up mostly watch sales and the like. :D

I may be wrong(a not uncommon occurence) but I think exhibition cases were common way back when pocket watches were the norm. I seem to remember seeing old pocket watches in which one could view the movement.

Perhaps this was carried over to the wristwatch at some point in it's early developement.

I have no idea who was first but it may very well have been started long ago.

Or Not!

First exhibition backs I ever saw were on Oris watches about 7 or 8 years ago.

I don't know if that means anything or not.

I don't know who started it but I like them. I liken it as a lazy mans case so you don't have open and disturb anything. Adds alot to the character and lure for me. But the movement has to have some style or embellishment to warrant it for me.

With old pocket watches you could actually 'reach-out and touch the movement.' A lot didn't have any glass over the movement as I recall.

Now Accutron was the first I remember to show the 'full monty' so-to-speak. Then quartz came along and all the cases had closed or solid backs.

I don't know the answer, but I will say that my first exhibition back auto was my Oris purchased back in 1998; so I'm with Foster!

thanks-
Marc

Goes back way further than you might think!

It all started with pocket watches; salesmen traveling the country to peddle watches to department stores, jewelry stores and watchmakers all over the country wanted to show off the movements and decoration / regulation. So those "salesmen samples" were the first to have the solid casebacks or hinged backs replaced with crystals to show off the movment while keeping it dust proof. :)

And watchmakers that take pride in their work loved it. No wonder it became popular again; why hide those beauties?

Cheers

Matt
