Hi Guys,

I was thinking about doing some traveling overseas in the next few months when it hit me - I don't have a GMT!

What kind would you recommend?  Quartz or Auto?  Also, I'm not looking to blow a lot of $$$ right now - so the more bang-for-the-buck the better!

Thanks!

BERNHARDT watches sells a GMT that is probably the best deal for the money.

Very favorable reviews, and many speak highly of the owner / proprietor.

For more money, similar style Debaufre Ocean-1 GMT.

Please keep us posted as to what you decide.... and post picturs of your watch and travels.

Jim

Hey Guru....DeBaufre has some scratch&dent GMT's FS and at a sweet buy for a nice Swiss Made timepiece...let them know you are from 3T if you decide on one...they are an excellent buy imo and rarely have a mark on them from my experience...I know several members own 1 and have heard nothing but good reviews...you can pm Chris/Watchstuff ...he is the rep for DeBaufre here at 3Thand6.gif

I second the recommendations of Debaufre and Bernhardt GMTs. Hard to beat those in the under $500 category. If you want to step up to the next level, look at the Oris Diver GMT and Zinex Trimix.

Both good watches...also, any of the Seiko Chronograph watches with alarm function can be used as a "GMT" simply by setting the alarm sub-dial to the second time zone. (Damn, I never thought I would be recommending quartz....MEDIC!!!)

Below is my Seiko SN281...

would the alarm go off?

would the subdials be spinning all day?

I've read that a diver can be used to track a second time zone by simply turning the bezel... I think it only works though with relation to the hour hand, and is a bit difficult.

Better yet would be any of the Citizen dive watches with dual analog and digital display.

No, the alarm dial would not go off unless you activated the alarm and the subdials would "spin" in this fashion:

1) The "9" oclock subdial is a seconds hand like on the unitas 6498 movement.

2) The "alarm" subdial would move only to keep the 2nd time zone (rotate once every 12 hours)

3) and the top subdial (minute counter) would only move if the stopwatch function were activated.

i had a chase durer alarm chrono a few years ago - i couldn't figure out how to work it properly.  the alarm would go off when i didn't think it was supposed to and wouldn't go off when i wanted it to! mistake.gif

I kind of like the Zeppelin stuff for that. Long Island Watch has the Dual Time GMT (7642-5) for $219. Handsome watch - formal enough for business travel; cool enough for tourista travel.

Also not so expensive that you freak if something happens.. I have a coworker who "lost" a Corum on a trip (hotel staff are the main suspects), and he still moans.

Depends on what you like of course.
