I've given myself a year to save up to something special for my 30th next year and I thought I could use a few opinions and justifications since I'm such a fickle sorta guy. These particular pieces have always struck my fancy, and I'd like to know your thoughts on them too. Disclaimer: none of these photos are mine. I found them off the web and are purely for my own reference. If you are the owner of any of these images and would like them deleted please PM me and I will do so immediately. And the bucket list goes: ![]() RGM Model 250P. I really like this most unique take on the Fleiger, especially the blued dial screws and the tiered dial construction. Also being an RGM, I'd be hard pressed to see someone else wearing one in Singapore. ![]() Rolex Explorer I. I've wanted one every since I was 18, when dad brought me to the AD to pick up his GMT II. It's an iconic, instantly recognisable piece that will never grow old in my eyes. Inifinitely versatile to go with any attire. Problems? Everybody and the local pawn-shop has one, not to mention the fakes ![]() ![]() GO Senator Navigator To me, the final word in pilot watches and the watch of choice for someone discreet yet informed. Best part is, being a Glashutte, the nicest bits are the bits you can't see. ![]() Tag Heuer Monaco Reissue. I'm not a big Tag Heuer fan, but I'm a big Steve McQueen fan, and this watch will always bring back memories of that famous scene in the Le Mans movie. This is another timeless design, imo. ![]() Sinn 203 ST. The essential Sinn chronograph. Rugged, dependable, legible and a no-nonsense companion. ![]() Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 38. Finally a simple, solid dive watch that fits on my skinny 6.75" wrist without looking like a wrist-weight. I also really like that mesh bracelet. But most of all, I'd like to know what you guys think, and if there are any owners here willing to chip in with their thoughts? Thanks everyone. Jonathan

Tough choices, Jonathanface4.gif. Your choice should suit your lifestyle now and what you see it to be over the next 5 to 7 years. If you work indoors in an office like a card-bearing desk diver (like me), the choice might be different than if you worked outdoors in the street.....say as a civil works surveyor. But just my 2 cents: For warm and humid Singapore, maybe I'd think twice about the leather strapped choices although among them, I'd go Tag. I'm not a TAG guy myself, never was and never will, but that rare re-issue is something notable to own. If you decide to go Tag and leather, the solution is simple: frequent strap changes. It's now a toss-up between the timeless and decades-proven Explorer 1 and that very eye-catching Breitling with such a clean and refined dial plus a mesh bracelet as a bonus. The recommendation: the Breitling 2 cents done.;)

Thanks BRP. I work in advertising, so it's more about looks and what it says about you. That being said, there are plenty of people in the industry who will blindly buy whatever the media throws at them (and there's a lot of uppity lifestyle media here in S'pore.) and after all, I want a watch that will remind me of what I was like at 30 when I'm...I don't know...50 or something. I know they're great watches, but current top of my "no" list is the VW Golf GTI / Panerai Luminor Base owner. The advertising guys here like to go with the B&R 01 or 03 models too, for some reason. Designers are a little cooler! I was in a meeting a few weeks ago and one of the Jesper Morrison Rado's and another Meistersinger Uno were present. Tres sharp. I appreciate your thoughts. The GO. It's classic and it's cool. I'm in advertising too, it if means anything (and it probably doesn't).

Hey, cool, I was thinking exactly the same, getting a nice watch for my 30th next year. Although I'm more into divers, so it's something like Sinn U1 or Doxa for me. I'd take the Breitling of course, I love the looks and it does look gorgeous on that mesh bracelet.

What a tough choice to make from these fine offerings. Questions really is which speaks to you most at your milestone birthday of 30? That being said my first choice(s) would be either the GO or RGM. Classic, understated and most certainly fine timepieces. If you are really looking to make a statement though, I would think the McQueen would do that nicely. I' with you, classic design and invokes great memories f the man in the Porsche. Whatever you choose it sure looks as though you will have one heck of an heirloom watch which you might look back on at 50 and wonder what you were thinking and why you listened to those crazy guys at 3T. ![]()

I really like the Tag Monaco. Probably the only Tag I would own. You obviously cannot go wrong with the Rolex either. Classic looks no matter the occasion or dress.

Sooner76: Don't know what it's like in NC but Singaporean advertising / marketing types are even bigger trendwhores than the people we sell our hyperbole to! My best mate has the same opinion as you, but there are only two watches he would ever buy, the GO PanoNavi and the Chopard LUC Sport. Seagal: I hear ya. The thing I like most about Doxa is the case shape, though they never featured so strongly in my "must have" list. Paxman: I'm sure I will rue the day I took heed to the advice of those more manic than I. Danny: To be honest, the Exp I is probably *the* safest choice out there, but man it's a helluva choice. Thanks for your thoughts guys. Well, it's a year to go still, but I reckon if I start saving the dosh we'll all be a little more feverish trying to decide in 2010. Great thing about living in Singapore is the choice and the low import duties for those you can't find here.

Well I already have a SOH46 in blue :) So I'd likely go for the GO or the RGM.

Oh I almost got the brown / maroon one when they first launched but the markup was so darn hefty I had to pass. Bought a Kampf from Anders and a new notebook instead. The blue one has a very nice dial. I have a Chronomat with the same dial colour. Last edited on Wed Jun 10th, 2009 09:56 am by JKang |

I'm a big fan of the Explorer I ....size does not matter to me on this particular watch ....it is a classic and the true Bond watch which he wore in the books and what Ian Fleming wore while writing them hand6.gif
