I am a very recent convert to leather straps - courtesy of one Mr Savage. I avoided leather in the past for many reasons - not the least because in isolated Western Australia, I had never even heard of many brands and styles and colours until my WIS buddies opened my eyes to a new world of posibilities. Those that I have or had were one or more of too stiff , not waterproof :(, too easy to scar :X, too thin :?, lost colour, looked cheap (despite being expensive) or ... you know what I mean.

I respectfully ask just one question for open responses from all -

What is the softest or most comfortable leather strap you have in your collection?

So far for me, it is a 6mm thick Savage 22/22 brown cowhide with a pre-v buckle and one strap retainer. It is astonishingly supple, the colour is right, the quality is excellent and it feels like a million bucks on the wrist  hand6.gif.

The question is a subjective one, and not price dependent - so just let us know and see what you reckon are the most comfy leathers to keep an eye out for. Maybe it is a particular strap, maybe it is a range from one manufacturer - your choice - bring it on!

Thanks all! IanMThumbsUp02.gif

I have a custom made Juergens Bund style strap made from vintage leather. I'm very impressed with the craftsmanship and quality construction of it.

My softest leather strap is a Micah Dirksen "Sunset". Strap is a 22/22 with a brushed Panerai buckle.

Thanks murph and chick - before going ballistic with more straps, I wanted some feedback like this to give me direction. In the meantime, I bought a Bob Vertigo buffalo which I THOUGHT would be a softie , but as it turns out, it is not. Other Bob straps might be worth a look, but not this one - for me.

murph - your strap sounds like a good one. Bund style and vintage leather is a terrific combo.

chick - thanks for the pic! I have heard of Micah straps before - but where does one get them from?

Many thanks gents!

Ian, the softest strap I have is this one from Red12:

My other Red12 would be a close second. both are extremely supple.

Sorry to hear the Bob didn't work out as expected. I would still like to see it though.ThumbsUp02.gif

Hi again gents!

Thanks for your words of commiseration Pax - but it is OK - the strap was not a fortune to buy, and perhaps it will come good one day. As it is with watches, ya gotta try before you decide on one style or another - or many. Apparently there are some nice Bob Marino buffalo straps that I should have gone for. But never mind - onward and upward we go.

It was rude of me to post without pics, so I hope these (very) Q&Ds suffice.

The Panerai is on the Savage strap, the Marina Militaire GMT is on the Bob (note very technical addition of new round strap hole - cos it was too big to begin with) and the MKII is included on its OEM rubber, well - just cos I'm having so much fun with it. I have tried to show comparative thicknesses in the side closeup, the rest of the shots are for candy.

I hope that these give y'all an indication of the differences. I hear such good things about Micah and Red12 - looks like it is off to those boys soon...

Many thanks gentlemen!

My softest, most comfortable straps are both oem straps.  One came with my Stovard-Jurgensen Chronograph and the other with my Movado Kingmatic Chronograph.

Hi Ken. Both look terrific. Your Movado is so much more  cool10.gif than the Omega Dynamic which uses similar font for the markers. That is one nice Kingmatic! The grain of leather on the SJ is very nice, by the way - and it is great to know that there are companies that get it right, straight out of the box.

I feel very grateful for you guys giving me your opinions - that's a lotta years of experience I have kindly been allowed to tap into. I'm still gathering ideas.

Just as an aside - d'ya reckon there are many people out there that like straps that are as stiff as a board? And if not - why the heck do people make such stiff straps? I understand that there has to be a durability issue with some grades of leather, but I don't need mine to live through a nuclear holocaust - I just want them to be comfortable.

The more opinions the merrier - thanks again fellas! hand6.gif

Thanks for the heads up, Kenhand6.gif

Ya gotta understand that I am flying pretty blind here. Perth isn't exactly known as the leather strap capitol of the world. Ah well - we have nice beaches... and I did interview a client the other day that has a mild interest in watches. That makes two of us in the two million people in this state! I'm hoping to continue to share the sickness with my WIS buddies here - cos its awful lonely otherwise...

Our one Panerai AD here has landed a black stitched black ostrich 24/24 mm strap for another customer, and I am off to the city tomorrow to "inspect" it (I will sneak a moment trying it on, but not doing it up).  I reckon you can tell immediately whether the strap is going to be a keeper or a curiosity piece. And at Panerai OEM prices (OUCH!!) - I think that Micah (still don't know if he has a website??), Red12 and a few others are actually pretty good value.  Don't know much about Strap Culture, but I notice that they have a 15%-off special at the moment thru the paneristi site. And about 180 strap photos to drool over - there are some nice looking straps there.

Pigskin, huh?  Hmmm...  I've got a friend with a pig farm about 300 kilometres from here...   must give him a call...   ;). Which part of the pig should I ask for?? subtlelaugh.gif. And Ken - I have seen pigskin used in a coupla straps here, but the natural colour doesn't do it for me. I will keep an eye out and see if there are any pigskin alternatives - good suggestion, thanks!
