I have been planning to buy a new watch for a month, however my dilemma is that
most of my friends own expensive brand name Swiss Made pieces, that are about
the price of a good used car ($5000 +).

I am familiar with vintage watches like Bulovas,Gruens, Hamiltons and Elgins. I had them at one point or another in my lifetime. These were beautifully made gold-filled cases of either square, rectangle or curvex. Unfortunately, they can't handle the rigors of a busy restaurant kitchen due to the fact that these watches are 50-70 years old.

Alternatively speaking, then there's your choice of modern German Brands such as Sinn, Dornbluth,Limes,Muhle Glashutte, Glashutte Original and a host of others.

However, when it came to in doing research about German Watches. I was dismayed that some companies are using Asian Movements in order to reflect the price of their products.

My case in point, if I were to buy a new Riedenschild BluePearl Chronograph with a Chinese Made Movement for $700 compared that to a 1970's Tissot Chronograph with a Swiss Made Valjoux 7750 for sale $575.  I'll be buying the latter.

Companies like Dornbluth,Blancier, Limes and Archimede all are purchased online.
These are reputable makes for less than an used Rolex!
But with a budget of $2,000 am I getting value dollar for dollar?

Thank you in advance.

If I were working as a chef, Id be buying something that will take the abuse, 700.00 dollar range.

If I were working as a waiter, Id be buying the 2000.00 range

You looking or Bling

Hello,

I'm not real sure how your friends owning $5k watches is a problem for you but let's take another track. It does read like you've got some watch experience and would lean towards a mechanical/automatic movement.  Correct?

There are plenty of folks here who will help you drill down into style and brands, but we'll need alittle more info.  In addition to hucky's questions, do you have a budget?

My advice:  If you're going to be working in a kitchen with oils, sauces, flames and all sorts of impliments of destruction...  I'd go with a diver style watch with a stainless steel bracelet.  Robust, water resistant, simply rinse and go.  Perhaps something with a low profile to avoid the dings that will happen in close quarters with lots of activity?

Happy Hunting!

Also..if you are looking for a rugged high quality watch, the STOWA SeaTime is German made, Swiss Movement, fit and finish 2nd to none and has a great reputation.  I believe it is about EU635 on SS bracelet.

http://www.german-watches.com/cgi-bin/lshop.cgi?action=showrub&wkid=22060&ls=e&nc=1206110716-22364&rubnum=seatime.seatimeuebersicht&artnum=&file=&gesamt_zeilen=

Come with various color dials and bezels....

I forgot to mention that the watch is intended for myself and I am not bothered by my friends who also work in kitchens of other  restaurants, with $5,000 timepieces on their wrists.

Being said, the Sinn 103 A ST looks ideal for my kind of environment - affordable, strong, rugged and it won't break the bank. The Ollech & Wajs Ranger Series, was another watch worth noting - especially the yellow dial ranger with a ETA  Automatic Movement, this watch commands a presence, big, beautiful and bold.

Of course these are just brainstorming ideas, until I can find the time to settle in, on a my day-off to really get to see as to what's available.

Thank you again for you kind suggestions.

Here is one suggestion (not German though):

Inspired by a landmark design of the 1960s, Accutron's Astronaut houses a superb ETA 2893-2 movement inside its powerful steel case. The Swiss made movement powers a red-tipped 24-hour hand which points to the 24-hour scale on the anodized bezel ring scale. Other features include a domed sapphire crystal, luminous hands and markers, and water resistance to 100 meters. Unlock the deployment buckle and turn around the timepiece around to veiw the four-screw exhibition caseback etched with the signature endorsement of legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Numbered limited edition of 1,000.

Both the Stowa Diver's and the Accutron Astronaut are very reasonable.
I was even more surprized that Stowa Diver Model even offered a COSC Certified Chronometer for additional $265 (Converted from 177 Euros).

Thank you to everyone for their kind suggestions.

Sincerely,
Simon

Simon....the Stowa is a "dead-on" quality watch...my 2 non-COSC Stowa's run well within COSC specs.  So, unless you want COSC simply as a talking point...put that $265 to better use!

Or perhaps a Swiss/German rugged diver for less? Especially forgiving the abuse of a restaurant kitchen. I present the Jacques Etoile Plongeur:

Granted, it doesn't have the machined bezel, brushed steel "German" look of their newer model. But at one third the cost it's a good deal. Here's the $1700+ that replaced it on their line:

Finally, the Stowa Prodiver you seem to favor is a WIS grail watch. If that's really in your budget to beat on it at work; Get it. I want one too.

* Thinking to himself * Hmmm...decisions,decisions,decisions...Let's see here
The Stowa and Jacques Etoile are very close in price.

                                Choice No.1:

I can order the Stowa Seatime Diver for work
and an Atea Kleine Sekunde in Mesh Bracelet for my days off.

                                Choice No.2:

I can order the Jacques Etoile Divers in Bracelet for $590.
The watch resembles too much like a * Roley Subby. *

         Choice No.1
sounds really good because I can get two watches for around my
budget.  Later, if I decided to add a Stowa Marine to my Atea that would be a
nice little collection of 3 different Stowa watches.

With my mind made up I am going Stowa.
