WIS Alert!!

Was posted on the Timezome forum.

Just saw this and feel for the guy. I hear about such often. They even had a like story on the local news about 2 months ago. Just in case it gets deleted I'll quote it.

FRAUD ALERT
Jun 07, 2008 - 06:59 PM

Beware fellow WIS's for "Leoparding". His real name is Jordan Parand from Canada. His email is "fuzzyfriend51@yahoo.com". He lured me into buying an Aqua Terra and sent me a bar of soap. He is a loser. $720 out the door.

I hear about stuff like this with online deals all the time. I'm a news junkie so maybe see such things more than most.

There is always a chance of this happening. The risk is very real. When you check references only go with those you know. And as the old saying goes. If it sounds to good to be true most of the time it is.

Damn, that sucks.  I've been buying things from private sellers on the internet for over 10 years now, and I've never gotten stiffed like that; that's terrible.  $720 for an Aqua Terra does fall into the "too good to be true" category, though.

Sending a bar of soap could constitute mail fraud...a federal crime in the US.  I wonder if this guy could be tracked down.

Well, it's already a crime as it is, as well as a breach of contract.  As for US federal law, the seller was in Canada.  Even if the buyer was in the US, I doubt that extradition would be in order for a $700 case of mail fraud.  If the buyer was in Canada as well, then US law obviously doesn't apply.

Proving who did it, though... that's the tricky part in any of these situations.  Anybody can anonymously set up a Yahoo account.  If payment was made by money order or wire transfer, then it's not going to be recoverable.

Always shop the Seller, not the Watch

Check the Sellers Post Count,

Click on the Sellers username and check out  his activity prior to buying

Its a tough Decision because sometimes you spend time checking out somebody and the watch was flat out sold to somebody else.  CATCH 22.

Better to lose a purchase than your actual Fundsmistake.gif

Cheers

Oh yeah always ask for pics of his wife! Thats a good Seller ThumbsUp02.gif

Very unfortunate. Proof of the old adage... If it looks to good to be true, then it probably is... coyote2.gif

The reason they send soap bars, etc is it approximates the weight of whatever you "purchase", if you then claim you never got the goods, they simply say they shipped it to you, the have a shipping receipt to your address for the proper amount.

When asking for references, always ask for references from people you know or that post on other forums on a regular basis...otherwise, the scumbag can simply give you several email addresses that he owns and he answers himself...giving him, of course, glowing references!  If in doubt, post on the forums...I'm going to buy from this guy...will anybody vouch for him...and see what responses you get.

This is one reason 3T has the 50 minimum post or personal vouch for posting on the sales forum.

That's just not cool!  Any mention of where in Canada he is? I don't mind having a look for this guy.

I've only made a couple of private purchases on line and I always feel bad that I don't have a lot of previous purchases to vouch for my good standing.  I'd never want to do someone wrong and jerks like this just make it even harder for the 'new guy' or a 'stand up' guy that doesn't buy very often.

Seriously though, if any canucks out there hear of something, let us know. I'm always up for helping a WIS out.

This brings out one of the deepest fears a relatively new WIS like me can have. This is why I haven't purchased a watch from any of the sales fora, nor from the dreaded e-Boy. I've been sticking to legitimate businesses for my purchases, and not individual sellers.

That one hurt, and I think about it at least 4 or 5 times a week...:(

I probably spend $500-1000 a month online and on Ebay -- have never had a problem.

I only deal with EBAYERS WITH 1000'S of transactions and never less than 98-99% positive feedback.

Always buyer beware no matter how good the deal.
