Can someone explain to me why on some forums I've read  that the Omega is a superior watch brand to Oris. I never owned either but I am just wondering, does Omega use better parts? Fine finishing? Vs Oris?

Well Omega is part of Swatch group so as such they do have access to movements and movement research first. They also have a larger marketing and distibution budget. Oris makes a very good watch as does Omega. I'm not sure that for the bulk of production their is any substantial difference in quality. I think Oris is a much better value. Just my 2 cents

Imho, Omega isn't really superior to Oris when you come right down to what you are getting for your money. Omega does have a more recognizable name and is able to charge more for their watches due to spending more money on advertising nad having a couple iconic models such as the Seamaster and Speedmaster.

I have handled both brands and have found Oris to be every bit the equal, if not the superior to the Omegas I've handled. Now, Omega does have some very high end pieces and reaches a price point beyond Oris in that regard, but I am pretty certain both are modifying base movements and are not true manufactures. Omega is part of the Swatch group and therefore has access to ETA movements while I believe Oris started using Sellita movements as the base for many of their models.

I've known several WIS who have run through Omegas and they just never seem to stick to them, while it it almost universally known that Oris provides a huge value in their watches providing excellent fit and finish and a quality product.

That being said... I have a hankering for an Omega myself!;)

JMHO!:D

only difference I see between the 2 brands when purchasing new is that Omegas hold their value over the long run.....unfortunately Oris seems to lose up to 50% on resale value ....something many of us have noticed over the years ;)

Omega as of the past couple of years has used ETA top shelf movements, and they modify them.  A decision was made 3 years ago to move Omega to a higher market position.

Oris is a design studio & assemblers as of the past few years.

I am probably wrong about Oris but I am not about Omega.

TY E for that info!hand6.gif

....I don't think there is any doubt that Omega is considered a higher end Swiss watch over Oris and that they have rivaled Rolex since their existence....Omega is also inhouse whereas Oris outsources their construction....mostly to Fricker and other sources from what I have been toldwatch2.gif

I'm with Pax on this, handling and wearing my friends Planet Ocean and my TT2 I'd say that the are equal with the Oris be superior in some regards.  However, Omega is an iconic brand and recognized the world over whereas Oris might only be known by a WIS (even if only a modest closet WIS).  So I guess you'd have to define what superior is to you. I have no wish to resell any of my watches so Oris is superior to me because it's a better value imho.  However technologically as stated Omega does have better access to newer components or inventions (ie co-axial mvmt's).  Seeing as how my joy of watches is ever increasing (thanks 3Tmistake.gif) I'll eventually get one of everything so I don't have to debate one way or the otherwoohoo.gif

Oscar is correct on the information on Oris, that
they do use Fricker for their case construction.
Omega is considered as a luxury brand that has
a long illustrious history in watchmaking.

December issue of Watch Time Magazine has
included a 112 page supplement dedicated to
Omega.

Cheers,
Simon:)
