I am keen to get other folks opinion on this....

When I started collecting watches, I set myself some rules about what would go into my collection.  My main rules were:

Rule 1: only watches that have a significant emotional impact on me (and others), that I would wear on a regular basis (not watches that are valuable to the market but not wearable by me....I am not a speculator or trader)
Rule 2: nothing less than 40mm case size
Rule 3: nothing goes out (I have never sold a watch - only a significant change in my financial situation or what 'does it for me' would force me to sell something)
Rule 4: no quartz movements (this is connected to craftmanship, the need for care, uniqueness etc.)

So far I have been able to expand my collection happily and stay within these 'rules'.  But..........I am increasingly finding that there are watches that meet Rules 1 & 2 but violate Rule 4!  Actually it was Mark's Ocean7 G-2  over on 'New Arrivals' that finally prompted me to seriously question Rule No. 4.

I am guessing that most people are guided most by somethign like my Rule 1, but I would be really interested in other people's collecting 'rules' and specifically.....give me some arguments to help me convince myself that 'quartz is OK' .........so that I can buy a G-2!

If you only dated blondes and Angelina Jolie called you up would you give her the elbowmistake.gif

Looking at your rules you've seen to priotise them, I've got very similar buying crieteria but haven't written them down!

Most of my watches are mechanical because that's what I like but I do have a few quartz. Must say its rather nice just to put one on and not have to set the date/timerev_smile.gif

I think if you like it buy it - nothing wrong with quartz thats just the engine. Audi won Le Mans with a diesel car - I wouldn't turn one of those down even though I'm a petrol head.

Over the years I have changed some. In the 1990's I mostly bought quartz watches. Have sold or traded off most all of those now. Have a handful left. :)

Mostly buy Automatics now. Do have some manual wind and some solar powered ones too. ;)

After a while I just got tired of changing batteries. LOL :D

My buying criteria is similar to yours except that rule #3 falls victim to rule#1.  I can't determine if a watch meets the criteria of rule #1 until I have it in hand and live with it for a month or so (or an hour sometimes).  If it doesn't live up to my expectations, out it goes to make room for another.  I try to keep my collection to 10ish watches and only pieces that I will wear and enjoy.  No drawer queens.  If a watch gets overlooked for a couple weeks or a month, the thrill is gone and out it goes.

While I don't have a "no quartz" rule, my collection is 10ish autos, 1 ecodrive, 1 kinetic, and one quartz, so I'm definitely in the auto camp.  But the G2 evoked an emotion in me that I couldn't suppress.  It is simply an awesome looking piece with a stellar case and bracelet at a killer price.  I also agree that it is nice sometimes to just grab a watch and throw it on without winding or setting the time.  A "lazy day" watch.

Sorry that my G-2 post is causing you such turmoil :P

I have a six or so Quartz watches. If you get a good watch with a battery life rated at 3-5 years, you won't be changing that often. And, there are a number of watches with 10 year batteries (lithium, I believe).

Really cheap quartz watches tend to have batteries that crap out after a year or so.

I prefer autos over anything else but I do not have a no quartz rule. In fact there is one quartz watch I want very much, the original Bathy's UV model but I will never give what everyone wants for them so I probably will never own one.

I had the no quartz rule as well (except for the Eco-Drive I keep around to set the automatics to), and whenever I violated it, I found myself flipping the watch soon afterwards - even if it has nothing to do with the sophistication of the movement, I feel that I am giving something to the automatic since it gets wound as I wear it - i.e. my wearing it makes a difference.  With the quartz, whether I wear it or keep it in the case for six months, it doesn't matter, and that kind of popped the balloon on my interest level.

Nowadays when I see quartz on a pricey watch, I think it either must have a crazy dive rating, or I don't even look at it - think about how much extra an ETA 2824-2 would cost?  I think Borel and Ofrei have them for a little over $100  Small price to pay (on the part of the watch manufacturer) for a huge difference in perception of the watch for nuts like us.

Recently in new arrivals I posted a Wenger 1000 meter diver with a green bezel .....and I explained in the post I own 50 or 60 and out of all them I only have 3 quartz but I like those three ... that Wenger only cost me 180 dollars and it kicks ass ....the others are a Formex Chrono and a echo drive promaster ....In watch collecting I stay usually with ETA based Swiss divers but there are too many rules in life as it is ....I like Skips analogy with blonds and such

I usually buy what ever I like, quartz/auto/hand wound, as long as I can afford it. I thought I would never sell a watch, but now when I see something I want, I have no problem selling a watch that I don't wear very often to buy a new one.
Just do what makes you happy.
