I'm a movement snob too... Indeed, while I don't share your love of big watches, your rules are largely my rules with the exception of no quartz.

I have a number of ETA 205.111|711|911 Autoquartz watches - from solid 14kt to cheap Swatches -- they are automatics and quartzes with highly jeweled movements.  Fun as most have transparent backs.

And I have several thermocompensated ETA movements - you can adjust them yourself and end up with a watch that is accurate to 1 second a year.  Again, fun.

Mechanicals are fun too -- most of mine are mechanicals and my latest buy was a NOS 1960 Tissot with a pristine 14kt case.  But a good quartz can be just as interesting.  Don't count them out just because most are 'throwaways' -- some aren't!

I don't know if anyone has noticed -- my icon is the first mechanical movement timed by quartz.  The batteries were replaced by an automatic movement that charged a capacitor... It's the HPM from Asulab (Swatch Research). It was developed about 15 years ago... Now that's fun too!  woohoo.gif  (The closest I can get to having one is the Autoquartzs...  I can't bring myself to pay Seiko's price for their copy, the Spring Drive.)

I have noticied a bit of movement elitism since I joined the forum. One reason I stopped posting to the "new arivals" section is the inevtiable, "yes, but it's only a quartz movement" comment. I am now trading off many of my automatics because I'm tired of having to reset my automatics before I put them on the wrist. Yes, I do have six auto winders but that too is a bit of a pain as well. I'll put my Omega Seamaster (yes, it's only a quartz) up against your automatic Seamaster any day. I can deal with the hassle of replacing a battery every couple of years for the accuracy and convenience of my quartz.

The only relevant criteria are (1) do YOU like it and (b) can you afford it? I frequently violate the second criteria much to my wife's dismay. I just got a $99 Sthurling Pilot quartz movement that I like, enjoy and wear more than several watches costing 20 times more.
It isn't a question of right/wrong good/bad. Maybe you don't prefer a quartz movement but some of us do. There's more than enough room for both kinds of movements.

Funny you should say that....one of the reasons I started to question my own 'elitism' was that posts here regarding new quartz arrivals were NOT getting that kind of response.

You make a really good point about the 'wife factor'.......One thing that I hadn't thought about that will finally swing it for me is that relaxing my 'no quartz' rule is certainly going to make my wife happier! hearteyes.gif  (well until she realizes that while the price of each one might be lower, the USPS guy is coming more frequently!!!)

Buy what one likes and enjoys ... there is room enough for all makes and movements ....I love my Wenger 1000 meter quartz that I recently posted in new arrivals ....  but I am interested in horology and its history and there were no quartz's back even in my dad's day and there is beauty in an automatics movement also ....anyone who sneers at a watch that somebody buys and likes is an a-hole

I'll say ditto on buy what you like.  One of my favorites is a Seiko quartz chronograph, the SNA225.  It is nicely finished for the price, and the alarm movement can be used as that or a second time zone.  Plus the chrono hand moves in 1/5 sec steps that mimic a mechanical, cool :D
Most of my watches now are autos or hand crankers, but I have a watch box full of quartz that are my go to's when I am in a hurry and don't have time to set an auto, or when I have a gig and I use my G-Shock (I play drums).

Cheers,
Griff

Guys, don't get me wrong here.  I've never questioned why others buy quartz watches and would certainly never sneer.  It's just never been for me....until yesterday.  Have added 4 quartz watches to my want list and one of them is at the top....that G-2........

You aren't being critical of quartz movements . . . but you did raise the issue or opened up this can-o-worms.

I agree, buy what you like and what makes you happy (and what you can afford). That is what our hobby is all about. Most of my watches are mechanical, I just find mechanical movements fascinating. But that does not mean I don't like a good quartz time piece. Heck, I have several quartz powered pieces in the collection. I have 2 Sector 600 dive chronos

Both excellent watches. Quality is great and both super accurate. I also just purchased an Ocean 7 G-2. Also a great watch with it's swiss Ronda 5030.D movement. As a WIS, collect and wear what makes you happy. :D

Dave
