I just finished reading Radium Halos and found two other books to read on this sad subject.

Radium Halos is a fictional story and I enjoyed reading it, but it may not appeal to everyone.

I heard of the "Radium Girls" but new to the other two books. They look like they will be an interesting read.

A village near me, Sag Harbor, has an old Bulova watch factory that has been closed since after WWII. It is still a Hazardous waste site. They used to do radium dials there, and the ground water around it was contaminated.

Thanks for the info

Interesting. The Radium Dial factory referred to in the book was so radioactive when it was torn down, it all had to be carted away and buried.

Check this video out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQfgIqfTvwQ&feature=related

The latter half of the video shows products besides watch dials that were sold using radium. Incredible!

I did a little more checking on the Sag Harbor Bulova watch factory. They actually made watch cases ,and did alot of gold/silver and gold filled cases. It was built in 1881, and actually was open if I read some of the articles correctly into the early 1970's. They apparently dumped large amounts of toxic wastes directly into the buildings drains, causing major ground water contamination, and it is listed as a super-fund site.

I guess that factory might be turned into condos:

Yep..that's the one....As they say in real estate, Location, location, location...or somethinhg like that.

For a small village, they sure have their share of hazardous waste sites.
There was also a Nabisco factory which also did some major toxic dumping there, as well as an old coal gas factory which under the site they found a major spill floating on top of the water table a few years ago....And the place is famous for being an old whaling seaport....

Not sure I'd want to live in the area where the toxic waste was dumped or the old Bulova building.

It's hard to find anywhere these days that doesn't have some level of ground water contamination.
