As a beginner, I don't have any real idea which brands or movements are the good ones, other than the extremely expensive ones which are out of my price range. I've been searching for a watch to replace my aging Citizen EcoDrive. I'm looking for an automatic watch, similar to the Omega Seamaster, at a price point around $500. I want a watch that will go with anything, sporty or dressy, and has a nice size and weight. I love the Omega Seamaster (James Bond's watch) but I don't have that kind of money to spend. I am willing to buy either new or used. Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to 3T. A great place to be. ;) For watches in that price range, automatic and Swiss made you do have several options. I'd suggest checking out some of the sites to the left on the menu bar under "3T Forum Friends". You can also input in your favorite search engine the general specs of the watch you are looking for and see what results come up for you and filter through those. Also glean through the various watch forums. There are good deals to be had but check out any seller. Forum search features are great for this and looking up what is available on the forums too. Good luck and feel free to ask if you have any other questions. ;)

You have a lot of options right around that price point. I am going to be forward and suggest a Reef Ranger from our friend Keith at Boschett Watch. I just got one and it is a quality piece which exceed its price point with super value. The secondary market would also give you a lot of options. A quick resource for getting a look at all the major sales forums is found here: http://www.elitedealseeker.com/index.cgi?category=watches Enjoy the hunt!! woohoo.gif

Welcome to the 3T forums from another FNG. In addition to the Boschett Reef Ranger, I would take a look at the Debaufre Ocean One Automatic, which also seems to be a beautiful watch. Debaufre is also a friend of 3T.

My brother scored this German Nivrel with a 2824-2 movement for less than $500 bucks. The case is very similar to the Bond style you like. The 2824-2 is the most common and reliable Swiss auto movement for watches in that range (as far as I know). All my watches use it, regardless if the brand is Swiss, Italian or German. http://www.righttime.com/rt/nivrel/141.001casmb.htm

How does the Boschett compare to the Debaufre Ocean 1?

I would suggest the black (or possibly the blue) dial as it will "dress-up" better than the colors. At the $500.00 price point, you cannot go wrong It's your best bet! I do not own an Ocean 1, but I have handled one (I do own the Steinhart/Debaufre Mach1) and it is a fine watch...the difference is that you can get the Boschett right now at an introductory price...I'm not sure what the ultimate price will be, but the $800 range is not out of the question. That said, you cannot go wrong with either watch...they are both quality products!

The Reef Ranger seems nice, but I have a special place for many Japanese watches (Seiko/Citizen/Casio). If you want another suggestion, take a look at a Seiko SBDC001 (black dial)/ SBDC003 (blue dial) or for a little 'pop' the SBDC005 (orange dial). Personally, I don't like the 'cyclops' on the Reef Ranger, but every taste is a little different. A hacking/handwinding movement made in-house by Seiko, which runs within +/- 5seconds per day (based on a poll of current owners) is pretty awesome :D. Here's the black Sumo: ![]() Here's the Blue: And lastly, here's the Orange: ![]() And yes, you can get the bracelet on the Orange as well (from either of the two AD's online). And it falls right in your price window hand6.gif. Last edited on Tue Jun 3rd, 2008 03:18 pm by Topher1556 |

I concur with the others that recommend a Boschette Reef Ranger. From what I have seen and read, you simply can't beat the introductory price on this quality of a watch....and almost guaranteed not to spot another like yours unless you hang out with some WIS members! woohoo.gif The top quality engine alone is almost worth the price of the watch. However, If you are looking for something just a little more dressier, I would recommend an Accutron vx200 series watch. You can get them on the bay from around 295.00 and up. Also listed at many internet sites on sale from $299.00 to $499.00. It really depends on the style of watch you prefer. I tend to like chrono's and divers with a skeleton or two....Enjoy and welcome!
