A good friend of mine is visually impaired. She needs a watch which:

1) is an automatic/mechanical
2) has sapphire glass
3) has a large diameter
4) has a black dial/face with very well lumed markers (does not need date or numerals)
5) is less than a few hundred dollars

Any advice would be most helpful. Thank you, WIS community

Sounds like the friend is a lady, therefore I would suggest this one (Photo from Gnomon watches site):

This is 39 mm, Titanium, well lumed, Swiss Auto, $400 at Gnomon watches, Sapphire. I had one and it is very well made, the titanium keeps it light but big enough to see, very visible black dial with high contrast white numbers. 39 mm should be pretty big for a lady but not overwhelming. 20mm lugs is a pretty common size and it should be easy to find different bands if needed.

This is great, but she does actually want something 46mm +. She'd rather have it large and visible.

I agree a pilot's watch would be best. Having actually read your requirements my suggestion would be any of the DeBaufre big pilots which seem to be readily available on the secondary market. The are 46mm or 48mm. I had a very nice Revue Thommen 55mm pilot which I sold and that would have been just ideal. The DeBaufre CSARS are also highly legible imho.

You might comsider Laco. They make pilot styles from 42mm all the way to 55mm; with a choice of ETA and Miyota autos, and at least one handwind. Quality is good, and they have decent lume.

There is also another relatively affordable 46mm Pilot watch from Wilson Watch Works, I did a review of this some time ago, here is the link, I just posted in this review forum:

http://www.timetechtalk.com/view_topic.php?id=20381&forum_id=4

Here is a a couple of photos:

This has most qualifications like big, easy to read, sapphire, mechanical (hand wind only), lumed.

Hope this helps.

Yes the pilot would be great, I saw a Seiko Automatic Discusburger which looked cool but not as big as you want. With it having to be automatic the pilot I would agree is the best choice really. If it needs to be cheap maybe a Parnis, I have recently got one of these and I am very impressed, have a look at new arrivals. On the quartz side you can get watches that talk the time, binary watches that use LEDS to tell the time when you press a button.

Best value would be the Seiko Kamikaze. It's 44mm and just the right sized, big pilot dial. Lumibrite lume is only bested by the BM/OM and by the Debaufre/Steinhart big pilots with C3.

Here are a few pics:

Steinhart Nav-B I wore the other day. This is C3 luminova and is really tops on lume.
