Another NOS chrono arrived today.  "Top Timer Splendour Sport"

Since I can't resist interesting chrono's, I jumped at this.  It certainly is not a top end watch, but interesting nonetheless.  Swiss made, 1(one!) jewel.  The subdials are puzzling.  The one on the left is marked to 14, and indicates minutes. Does not reset at all, but runs continuously together with the lower subdial, which indicates seconds.  The single pusher controls the large second hand on the watch, effectively reducing it to a one minute chrono.  The dial on the right is just a dummy!

The case is base metal and the back is friction fit.  Due to the large cavities on the side where the crown stem and pusher go through, it is obviously not even splashproof - therefore marked "dustproof"!

The movement is very unusual and unlike anything I've seen. Only marking is "Swiss watch ZZ". Can't find anything in my books that resembles this at all.

It keeps excellent time and the chrono functions well.

Anybody seen this before?

And a pic of the movement:

Graham, I think it's a watch with a notable design. It might have been a prototype years ago and was eventually sold. But I looked very closely at the 3rd dial (the dummy) and somehow I think the hand was removed and never got replaced. I think, we can only be certain if the watch were taken down. I'd suggest you take the watch to the spa and have a hand installed in that. It's a very nice watch to keep particularly because it tells good time.

I've seen the design before but not heard of the name on this one before. Unique for sure. Nice find. ;)

I did remove the movement and inspected that blank subdial carefully.  Although there is a hole, the spindle is absent.  I will get a watchmaker to investigate further, though.

That reminds me of my Endura chrono that I got from my grandmother back in 1971.  It has a  Swiss 1 jewel pin lever movement by "R. Lapanouse" , but with two pushers.  The bottom starts the seconds sweep, the top stops it, there is no reset.  The subdials move with the rest of the movement.
I still have it, and amazingly it is in decent shape but seriously needs cleaning.  It will run for a little while then stop.  I haven't been able to find any watchmaker willing to look at it.  "Can't get parts" is the same refrain, though I know it just needs a cleaning to remove 38 years of dirt!
Our local watchmaker's father replaced the crystal on it 30 years ago, but he won't touch it either :X

The pic isn't mine, but it is identical to the watch in the middle.
There are two Cimier branded ones on the 'Bay right now.

Cheers.
Griff

Here's a pic of a similar movement on Ranfft:

Interesting, Griff!

That movement you point to is also not listed in any of my books.  Obviously the lower end chrono's were not considered important enough to be included.  I find these obscure movements very interesting, though!

Thanks for the interesting response!  How about a pic of your watch?

I'll dig it out tomorrow.  I am also curious enough to finally open up the back and see just how dirty it is in there :D
I really wish I could get it running, while it was like $15 brand new in '71, it is totally priceless to me.  I wore it to the first running of the Pocono 500 USAC Indy race and was just as proud as if I had a Heuer Carrera on my wrist.

BTW, when it was running, the tick was so loud it could be heard across the room in a closed drawer!

Cheers,
Griff

Zippofan, your chrono smells like a column wheel. If it truly is (and not lever) it will be very hard to fix, IMHO. Yes, it can be priceless.
